Election in New York.
New York, Nov. 6.?Hughes elected
govornor of the Empire State. His
majority over Hearest i9 estimated at
40,000. Mr. Hughes (Rep.) said: "I am
very much gratified if elected as now
seems to be the case, but I shall not
speak in detail upon matters^ about
which there is an uncertainty. I understand,
however, that my election
is pretty well assured, but whatever
my plurality may be, my feeling is
not one of elation, but of responsibilty.
That is all that I care to say at
present."

What stnnpndons follv!!
Good shoes cost more than shoddyones
because they are made of leather,
and there is nothing like leather.
There never has been found anything
to substitute for leather.
Thinking to save 15 or 25 cents some
parents will throw away a dollar.

Elections in 42 States.
Elections were held yesterday in 42
States, and while results in a number
of instances were of unusual interest,
it may be said that generally speaking
there were no great surprises.
Throughout the South the Demoprfttin
State and conpressional tickets
^ O 7?
have been elected by the usual majorities.
In the West and East the States
that were aligned two years ago in
the Democratic or Republican columns
show no material change, the Democrats
making gains in some instances
and the Republicans in others. The
Republicans retain control of congress
by a good majority.
