It is stated that some of the leading
negroes in Columbia have been and
are still advocating the idea of open"??

fall their undertakings they have a
distrust with their own color and such
a scheme would likely prove a failure
as all other ventures of the kind have.
District Attorney John B. Moran, of
Boston, Mass., has formally accepted
the nomination for governor tendered
him bytfee Democratic State Convention
of Mass. He wants it distinctly
, understood it is to be a State fight,
not a national one. Bryanism and
Hearatiam must be eliminated from
the contest.
Rev. Sam Jones, who was possibly
one of the best known platform
speakers and evangelists in the'United
States, died on the train Monday
morning en route from Detroit, Mich.,
to Memphis, Tenn. He died of heart
failure. Two of his daughters accompanied
him.
; In the recent election for State
gig Senator in Aiken county, G. L. Toole,
who is a local eoptionist and opposed
gfcl to the State dispensary, defeated Mr.
Pollattz, a candidate on the dispen;
gary platform. The election was for
the purpose of electing a successor to
Senator Johnson, who recently died.
Mr. D. H. Witherspoon who served
his time in this office is now in the
Observer office at Newberry. This
will be glad news?to his friends here
h ' who often make enquiry after him.

since 1902 been the pastor of the
n Lutheran church of the Redeemer, in
[V Newberry, recently tendered his re[;
signation to take effect February 1st
