break down and waste away cell by cell.
Bladder troubles almost always result
from a derangement of the kidneys and
a cure is obtained quickest by a proper
, treatment of the kidneys. If you are feeling
badly you can make no mistake by
taking Dr. Kilmer's Swam p- Root, the
greathidney, liver and bladder remedy.
It corrects inability to hold urine and
scalding pain in passing it, and overcomes
that unpleasant necessity of being
compelled to go often through the day,
and to get up. many times during the
night. The mild and the extraordinary
effect of Swamp-Boot is soon realized.
It stands ^he highest for its wonderful

Tbe Sporty Girl.
Girls, never think that you can win
admiration from men by being what
is termed "sporty." The other word
for sporty is "fast," and though men
may hang around the fast girl, they
have not one particle of real admiration
for her.
Men admire modesty above all !
j things in a woman. 1
The bold girl will always have a
certain following, for men feel that
they do not have to treat her as they
would treat a modest, refined girl.
They can make all sorts of jokes before'her
and treat her just as they
would a man.
They never think of showing her
the chivalry th'ey would feel bound to
show to a well bred girl.
And, as a rule, they are not the class
of men that a lady would care to have
as friends.
If they do happen to be men of the
better class they would never dream
of introducing the "sporty" girl to
their mothers and sisters.
As for marrying her, that would
never enter their heads. She is all
right for a rough kind of fun, but not
for a wife.
Very often a girl drifts into fast behavior
because she thinks it is smart
to behave in that way. She thinks
it adds to her attractiveness, and
makes her appear as a woman of the
world.
She has an idea that men like a girl
to be up-to-date and jolly. So they
do, but being fast is not what makes
a girl jolly.
The minute you allow a man to
make a vulgar joke or tell vulgar
stories in your presence you lose a
certain amount of modesty.
Sometimes a girl laughs at a story
that she does not approve of; she
laughs through embarrassment, and
because she does not want to appear
prudish.
It is infinitely better to appear a
prude than to countenance a story
that is not nice. If you show that
you do not like it the offense will not
be repeated, and the man cannot help
but respect you.
Do not be tempted to do things
which your good taste and common
sense tell you are wrong just through
fear of being called a spoiled sport.
Loud laughter and unladylike behavior
can hurt a girl's reputation
seriously.
And even should you behave properly
yourself you win be judged by
the company you frequent, and if
your friends are questionable you will
also be considered so.
Your good name is your most invaluable
possession; you cannot afford
to do the smallest thing to damage it.
Make men respect you; do not let
them take the least liberty of any
kind. They take you at your standard.
Self respect brings respect from
others.
Don't try to be "sporty." There is
nothing attentive or charming in that
quality, and you will be much more
loveable, if you are content to be just
a modest, well behaved girl.

Agricultural Display at Great
State ?air.
' Prof. J. N. Harper of the department
of agriculture of Clemson college,
arrived in the city yesterday to
arrange the agricultural display at the
fair grounds. It was deoided some
time ago tov place this department under
the charge of Clemson college officials
and Prof. Harper will at once
arrange all of the exhibits with a view
to displaying th to their best advantage.
The college itself will send down a
very large exhibit this year and the
letters received by Secretary Love indicate
that the building and surround ing
grounds will be filled with handsome
produce and that the judges in
this department will have no easy
position.
President Guiemard and Secretary
Love have placed everything in readiness
for the prompt delivery of this
display and it only remains for exhibtors
to remember that for the past six
months there has been a congestion
in freight surpassing all previous records.
Therfore it will be necessary
to bill all exhibits early and to notify
the secretary of the date of shipment.

The Briefest on Record.
In some of the courts of North Caro
lina atid Georgia, it is said that hours
are often taken to try a little criminal
case, or a civil suit involving about
$37. Lawyers will rear around and
make the 'people believe that the witnesses
are on trial. They will put up
half a dozen witnesses to establish the
same fact. They will also raise many
points and argue them with great
learning. The judges will, with a
great show of legal lore, decide these
points. After $200 worth of able arguments
and a $75 charge of the judge
i
i. ^}y v
and six hours deliberation by the jury
a verdict of $27.50 is reached. That is
the way they do in other States. Of
course m South Carolina we never
conduct cases in that manner. We
commend the following to all who are
disposed to waste the time of the
courts:
"The briefest summing up ever
made before a inrv oeenrred in the
county court, Brooklyn, when Lawyer
Edward Moran, 1 known as the
silver-tongued barrister, said: "My
client is not guilt}', your honor."
Not to be out-done in brevity, Assistant
District Attorney McCaffery
declared: ' 'He is guilty, your honor."
' 'Gentlemen of thejury," said Judge
Aspinall, ''decide between these two
learned counsel."
The jury, after deliberating a few
moments, returned a verdict of guilty.
* Warmer Weather.
Washington, Oct. 11.?A cold wave
swept over the South and East today
and broke all records for this season
in many sections, but tonight the
weather bureau announced that while
the temperatore would rise "only
slightly tomorrow," there will be
warmer weather Saturday and by
Sunday seasonal temperature will
again prevail East and South.

ITono Others Axe Wanted.
It is strange and unreasonable that
so many subscribers often reason that
their small dollar will make little difference,
whether they pay up promptly
or not, forgetting that where there
are so many that the sum total is a
big thing. There is nothing more
satisfactory to the publisher than to
have a clean list of prompt paying
subscribers. None others are wanted.
The Cold sad Frost.
President Harvie Jordon of the
Southern Cotton association estimates
that between 40,000 and 50,000 bales
of cotton were killed in the State of
Georgia alone, by the cold and frost
of last week. The damage not only
to cotton, but corn and other vegetation
was immense in all sections of
the country. It was probably the
heaviest frost with ice to visit the
different sections of the country generally,
so early in a decade or more.

The question as to the term of office
of Sheriff W. C. Ouzts has been
raised, and inquiry has been made of
the attorney general as to the exact
construction of the words 4'unexpired
term," stated in the commission issued.
Mr. Ouzts was appointed to succeed
his father, who was elected for four
years in 1904, and the attorney general
will probably rule that the term
rfloes not expire until 1908. The date
of the commission issued does not
legally constitute the term of office,
but it has been decided in a number
of cases that an appointment made to
fill an unexpired term was for the full
term of office.

Americans Lauded.
Havana, October 11.?An immense
crowd of Liberals, mostly negroes,
from all parts of Havana and its
suburbs, met Gen. Areinceba and
other returning exrebel chiefs at the
terminous of the Western railroad this
evening and escorted them across the
city to Liberal headquarters, and addresses
were made expressing satisfaction
at the result of the revolution
and lauding American intervention.
So Zt Goes.
Two negroes were lynched at Mobile
recently for assaulting three
white girls. One was lynched at
Basin, Miss. Two young men in
chjwge of two girls at the fairgrounds
of Macon were separated by a negro
forcing his way between them and
pushing them apart. When they remonstrated
with him he shot both of
them, seriously wounding one. There
is a race trouble at Argenta, near Little
Rock. Two negroes shot and
wounded a policeman and killed his
father. When caught it will be short
metre with them.
Henry E. Jones, of Tampa, Fla.,
writes: "I can thank God for my present
health, due to Foley's Kidney Cure.
I tried doctors and all kinds of kidney
cures, but nothing done me much good
till I took Foley's Kidney Cure. Four
bottles cured me, and I have no more
pain in my back and shoulders. I am 62
years old, and suffered long, but thanks
to Foley's Kidney Cure I am well and
can walk and enjoy myself. It is a
pleasure to recommend it to those needing
