The Historic Hock House.
By George
For the Lexington Dispatch:
Some seven miles south of Lexington
in the midst of the sand hills is
the historic "Rock House." Tradifi/vn
uavfl if. waa lnnafpd ahrmf a nentr
V1VU U%*J W A V fl ?VV AX^WVKVWV* w ^ _
ury ago and soon thereafter came into
possession of a family of sturdy Scotchmen,
and that these workmen cut and
dressed the soft stone from the hills
there and sold it at ready sale, most
of it going to Columbia, but some to
northern cities and a few shipments
back to their old home in Scotland.
There is no house there, but the
projecting granite from the hill side
gives it the name, for it would readily
house more than 100 persone at a time,
and so exact is the clearage, it looks
like it might have been done by contract,
and today it is as perfect as
when the red man discovered it?before
the pyramids of Egypt.
Far under the rock is a flowing
spring, basin like, and over it in aged
letters, "T. Brown, 1824."
In the formation of the cliffs are
soft stratas, and into these the visiting
humanity, desirious of perpetuating
his memory, has cut or chiseled
names and dates. This has continued
until at present on this stone wall can
be found familiar names from the
nearby farmer to the visiting tourist.
This property is now owned by nonrftsidpnt.
but about a Quarter of a
mile west is the "Jones mounds" on
the Freeman place, now owned by
Messrs. Roof & Barre.
Sending on the highest of these
cliffs about midday, looking east
across the valley, one can see the
black smoke rising from the modern
! mogul of the Southern railray's Florida
Flyer, some six miles distant, in
its mad push up Sand mountain and
at one point-the train comes into full
view.
No stone has been removed from
these quarries since the early fifties,
and it is remembered by neighbors
there that when these Scotchmen left,
that it required seven men to carry a
trunk of gold from the "house" to
the wagons on the hill a^ove, because
of the weight of the metal.
At present across and down the val- ley
many farms are in sight, and the
family names of Taylor, Clark, Reeder,
Sharpe, Shumpert, Lucas and Roland
are heard.
The various masses of rocks cover
several acres and they abound in grotesque
and romantic features, and for
many years at this spot, youths and
maidens join in the wild abandon of
appointed festival. Her haunts are
cherished, and the valley is proud of
the distinction conferred upon it.
Tyner's Dyspepsia Bemedy.
Many Have Dyspepsia and

! food after eating? See specks before
the eyes? Are you pale and haggard?

low spirited? Is there a sour taste?
Breath bad? Headache? Weak kidneys?
Bilious? , Constipated? Are you nervous?

is a dangerous condition. To cure, take
Tyner's Dyspepsia Rememdy. It is

| MURRAY IS IK AFRICA.
| Former Colored Congressman Under
Sentence Has at Last Been
Located.
George Washington Murray, the
negro who was convicted some time
ago of fraudulently obtaining land
liens in Sumter county, is in Africa,
according to the Southern Sun, a
colored paper published here. Murray
was arrested about two years ago on
this charge and upon conviction was
released on bail, pending a decision
by the supreme court after a trial.
The decision of the court was against
him, but Murray left the State before
the warrant for his re-arrest could be
served. His sentence was one year.
Murray was a congressman from this
State before 1S76.?The State.

Adams Will San?. ]
The famous case of the State vs.
Adams has at last been decided by
the Supreme Court of the State sitting
en banc.
It will be remembered that Adams,
some three years ago, killed a man
named Jacques, in Colleton county, 1
and for a long time eluded the officers
of the law. He was finally captured,
tried and convicted of murder, upon
the evidence of his neice, and sent- ?
enced to be hanged. Circuit Judge
Townsend granted a new trial upon
the ground of after discovered evidence.
The case has been hanging
fire ever since, and because of a hope- !
less disagreement of the Supreme ]
Court Judges, all the Circuit Judges
were called in, and the case passed
upon last Wednesday with the result
that a new trial was refused, and this
means that the original sentence must
stand, and Adams must pay the penalty
of the law. j
Besults of Neglect. s
In most cases consumption results 1
from a neglected or improperly treated j
cold Foley's Honev and Tar en res the
most obstinate coughs and prevents t
serious results. It costs you no more
than the unknown preparations and you
should insist upon having the genuine

Little Girl Silled in Sugar
Cane Kill.
Greenville, Oct. 1.?A little daughter
of Mr. P. E. Reid, living at Ebenezer,
this county, met a tragic death
today by being crushed in a sugar
cane mill. The child was playing
around the mill when she was caught
by the beam and before the mill could 6
be stopped she was horribly crushed.
