A DEMENTED NEGRO
HAS NARROW ESCAPE
Was Willing to be Killed if it Was Divine
Decree?Told to Leave lown.
\
Holly Hill, Sept. 26.?Major Taylor,
a negro living about three mile9 from
Holly Hill has afforded considerable
amusement to the fun-loving portion
of our townsmen recently. He does
almost anything he is told most willingly,
as he believes it is the will of
God, and many are the ludicrous
thiDgs he has done, but on Saturday
night he rather exceeded the limit,
and narrowly escaped a quick trip to
another world.
On Saturday night the front of Mr.
A. B. Bennett's home being open,
Taylor entered unnoticed, and going
up-stairs went into one of the rooms
and proceeded to make himself comfortable.
He ransacked a trunk and
bureau drawers until he found a gown
which he tore down the front and put
on; over this he put a dressing sack,
cutting two holes in it and drawing
the ends through to fasten it. Then
pulling bedding to the floor he went
to sleep. About 2 a. m. Mr. W. D.
Bennett, who was visiting at his
brother's home, was awakened by
hearing some one in his room. It was
Taylor. Mr. Bennett would have shot
the man but his pistol was beyond
reach, so he sprang from his bed
catching the man and pinioning his
arms to his side he said: "I've a
mind to blow your brains out," to
which Taylor replied "All right, if it
is God's will I'll go to heaven."
After a light had been made and it
was found to be poor, demented Taylor
in such fantastic garb, he was
taken to the guard house, where he
remained until Sunday, when he was
sent out of town with the admonition
not to return.?The State.

A Brutal Assault.
In Marlboro county last week Mrs.
Lucy Ann Patterson, wife of Dr. R.
J. Patterson, w&9 criminally assaulted
by a negro. She was alone with her
two children in the house at night
when she heard some one breaking in.
She ran out the back door and started
to a neighbor's house, but the negro
ran after her and caught her about
150 yards from the house, where he
choked her and committed the assault.
The woman's brothers went to his
house, but he escaped by taking a
plank out of the floor. The next day
he was caught in a small swamp in
the community by the sheriff and a
posse, and put in jail at Bennettsville.
There will be 110 lynching, and a
special term of court will be called at
once to try the brute. He will be
hanged in short order it is to be hoped.

Tropical Hurricane Leaves
Waste in Wake.
Louisville, Ky., Sept. 27.?The tropical
hurricane, which for 24 hours has
been churning the waters of the Gulf
of Mexico and doing much damage
on the coast and far inland, is tonight
whipping through north Alabama in
a northeasterly direction at a velocity
but slightly less than the 48 miles an
hour recorded in New Orleans during
the day. Reports received by the
Associated Press do not indicate any
loss of life, but the damage to property
is enormous. All wire commun- J
ication is seriously disarranged and
in some instances has resulted in cutting
off cities completely, Mobile,
Ala., not having been heard from for
nearly 24 hours. Numerous washouts
have occurred, the interruption from
this cause in one case extending 30
miles.
Pensacola, where the maximum velocity
of wind was probably felt early
this morning, reports a property loss
of $3,000,000 and sends rumors of loss
of life, which it is impossible to confirm,
as the uncertain wire which held
long enough to gleam this information
this afternoon failed with the coming
of night.
Atlanta, Sept. 27.?The Western
Union offices here have received a report
that a hurricane is blowing up
the Mississippi valley and that a tidal
wave has swept in from the gulf over
New Orleans, entailing a probable
loss of life and considerable property.
Wires between Atlanta and New Orleans
have gone down and no details
can be received. Reports received
here say that New Orleans is under
water. The depth given varies from
six inches to ten feet.

Fraser Lyon in Abbeville.
"The people who don't like Fraser
Lyon are fond of saying he did not
carry his own county. There is nothing
to hi9 discredit in that. When one
reflects how very devoted Abbeville
is to the dispensary, Lyon's vote there
is really remarkable." ,
The above is from the Newberry
Observer. There was no personal feeling
against Mr. Lyon that prompted
the vote of Abbeville against him. He
made no concealment of the fact that
he is opposed to the State dispensary
and will do what he can to destroy it.
The majority of the people of Abbeville
are in favor of the State dispensary
and voted to sustain it. The vote

There's grave danger from the plague
of coughs and 'colds tliat are so prevalent,

City, Me., writes: "Its a Godsend to
people living in climates where coughs
and colds prevail, I find it quickly ends
them. It prevents Pneumonia, cures
LaGrippe, gives wonderful relief in
Asthma and Hay Fever, and makes
