' Childm PoiseaeS by Eating
Jimsoa "West
Florence, Sept. 22.?The parents of
several children were very much
P alarmed last night. Two of Mr. W.
H. Commander's young children and
one of Mr. H. J. McVeigh's were
taken with violent convulsions shortly
before dark and it appeared that
death would overtake them immediately.
Three or four physicians were
summoned at once and for several
hours their efforts seemed unavailing.
Finally a stomach pump was used
k upon the McVeigh child, and it was
E \ discovered that the child had eaten
what is familiarly known as jimson
weed. The children had been playing
together during the afternoon,
and it seems had all eaten some of the
jimson weed^ As the wood is poisonous,
it was some time before the antif
-dotes administered the children took
effect. They are all reported as well
today.

DEATH OF CADET
JOE HEAVES.
Mystery Surrounds Clemson College
Student's Fatal Fall?Gloom Cast
Over the College.
Clemson College, Sept. 23.?Cadet
Joe E. Reaves of Latta died at noon
yesterday from the effects of a fall
' from a second story window of the
barracks some time Friday night.
That he had fallen from his room was
not known till daylight yesterday
morning, when Mr. A. F. Beaver discovered
the unfortunate young man,
lying in a dying condition on the concrete
pavement on the north side of
the barracks. Mr. Beaver called for
help and Messrs. F. M. Stephenson
and O. L. Derrick were the first on
the scene. These young men put
their fellow-cadet on a mattress and
i went for the college surgeon, Dr. A.
]VI. Redfearn. Dr. Redfearn saw that
there was no hope for the young man,
but had him removed to the hospital
and did all that was possible for him.
He never regained consciousness. i
How JMr. Reaves came to fall i3 a
mystery. Neither of his room-mates
knew of anything unusual until they
were waked yesterday morning and
found their room-mate on the pavement
below. There is no suspicion
whatever of hazing, because the three
room-mates, R. O. Poag, E. L. Martin
and Joe E. Reaves, were all classmates
and close friends, and, besides,
they are quiet, studious, sober, Christian
boys?all of. them taking interest
in the work of the Y. M. C. A. and
Sunday school.
Messrs. Poag and Martin say that all
retired at the usual hour last night,
in good health and the best of spirits.
They say that Mr. Reaves had been
greatly interested in the ladder fireescape
that was put up by his widow
recently, and had remarked that it
would be dangerous to jump from the
end of it, because it was so far from
the pavement.. The theory is that he
must have, in his sleep, tried to go
down the escape. The fall was about
18 feet.
A student escort accompanied the
! body to Latta, S. C. I

gloom over the entire college community.
The sympathies of all go out
to the entire family, but especially to
the young brother, who had just entered
college and who sat in sorrow
beside his suffering brother to the
end.
Prof. S. W. Reaves, formerly assistant
professor of mathematics at Clemson,
but now of the University of
Oklahoma, is a brother of the deceased
young man.?The State, 24.
