Gone With $2,000. I
Robert C. Brockington, aged nine
teen, who Has Deen tor aDout two
years collecting clerk for the State
Bank of Columbia, has disappeared
with ?2,000 belonging to the bank.
Shortly after the bank was opened
for business Wednesday morning,
young Brockington was given a sealed
package containing ?2,000, with instructions
to ship it by express to one
of the bank's customers.
Since the moment that he put on
his hat and left the bank with the
package in his poeket, he has not been
seen by any of the bank people, nor
have the eflBcers who were informed
of the matter after an interval been
able to ascertain what became of
him.
Brockington was arrested in Florida
on the 21st, Thursday. He is a mere
lad, and seems thoroughly ashamed
of his escapade. He had all the money
with him except ?90.

there is more in the man than in the
land. His cotton crop has averaged
year after year a bale to the acre.

Grand Rapids, Mich., Sept. 20.?
Eight masked and heavily armed
burglars held the people of White
Cloud at bay early today, while they
rifled the county bank and attempted
also to rob the bank of R. Gannin &
Son. The citizens gathered in such
large numbers that the robbers fled.
They secured between two and four
thousand cash from the Newaygo
bank.
The Snakes After Sia.
We look for Uncle Joe Harman
back soon for it seems that the rattlesnakes,
wild cats and gooseberry
brandy has terrors for him on Black
creek. He says, "this morning, Friday
the 14th, we killed a big rattle
snake measuring five feet and eleven
inches with six rattles and a botton.
My puppy trailed hjm for about two
hours and finally bayed him about
twenty-five yards from where we were
picking cotton. This 'is the tenth
rattler we have killed since my domicile
here. When I come, up I will
bring the skin." \

Tokio, Sept. 31.?The annexation of
Cuba by the United States is urged

the opinion of many throughout Japan.
The paper says Cuba's nominal independence
at present is not beneficial
to a majority of Cubans and is a
source of danger to other nations.
