The heaw crale and storm of Mon day and Monday night was terrific and caused much uneasiness in our homes for safety, etc., and in some places there was heavy loss of life and property. The sea coast suffered p much damage. In some places the earf was driven out for two or more miles, carrying distraction with it. The sea was rough and high and ships and steamers suffered in various ways, some even being driven out on land. Reports continue to come in with distressing results of the storm. Crops, especially cotton, is reported as being almost ruined, and will certainly I cause great loss in the price. It now seems that we are to have another two weeks wrangle over the dispensary question in the legislature at its next session, as the waring elements on the subject are about equally divided. We were correct as to the only real solution of the question, as to sentiment of the people in the State, which was for the convention, or State executive committee, to provide a seperate and distinct box in which to vote I on the liquor question. By this means you reach the sentiment of every individual entirely out of politics, and we shall contend that this is the only way this matter can be settled. The complexion of the present legislature k represents nothing positive as to what ^ the people want. Many of the legislators were elected in the primaries on their individuality and personal friendship. The whiskey question was not considered, and if so, was second*vvr onr? nnt sit all an issue "with thou (sands of voters in the State, whereas, if a box had been provided you would have reached an expression positive and undisputed. Whether just or unjust the jurors of Lexington county are certainly being well advertised. In the recent appealed railroad cases in question, in reviewing the cases, the court set aside the verdicts, which were favorable to the Seaboard road, and ordered new trials. The Supreme court in speaking of the action of certain jurors setting on said cases, severely rebuked them for accepting the courtesies of the railroad representative by spending the night at the hotel with him. The court in part says: 4 *Irl this case the evidence is clear that the jury box was not free from improper influences, and there was not a fair trial. It' is the judgment of this court that the circuit court be affirmed." While perhaps it was improper, yet we cannot imagine that these gentle men meant anything wrong, and tnat their conclusions were arrived at by clear consciences, whether favorable to the road or not. It was late in the night when the verdict was reached, p They were away from home, and through the politeness of the road's representative they unwisely accepted the invitation and spent the night at the hotel. ? We know that so far as the jury box is concerned there is nothing wrong with the officials who represent the tr ~ board of jury commissioners. They I are gentlemen of unimpeachable character, and it there is anything wrong it is with the jury law in its general requirements, and not with the board. I Congressman Lever wishes all persons to see to it that the roads are worked where there is need for it, so that there will be no trouble from this i cause. The department will insist on j the roads being in fairly good shape, j and will not hesitate to discontinue a route if the roads are too bad. Some of the fanners in the Epworth section of Greenwood county, S. C., are said to be in destitute circumstances on account of the storm which swept over that community some time since.
