HORRIBLE CRIME IN PICZE2TS. Two Little White Girls Victims of a Negro Brute Named Jeter Lawrence. Greenville, S. C., Sept. 3.?Charged with criminally abusing the two little daughters of a farmer, near Pickens Court House, Jeter Lawrence, a negro 45 years of age, was arrested by Sheriff Jennings and brought over and placed in the Greenville jail early Sunday morning for safe keeping. Lawrence is said to have been one of the hands on the farm, and his treatment of the two little girls, seven and nine years of age, respectively, is said to have been going on for two months. It seems that he had frightened them into silence, though one of them finally told her playmate, who later told her parents, and then the news came to the father of the outraged children. The negro was captured about 11 o'clock Saturday night. There was no excitement until Sunday morning, for nothing had been known of the outrageous behavior of the negro, until after he had been landed in jail here. No trouble is anticipated, though it i9 likely Lawrence would have been lynched had he been kept in Pickens. Starring to Death. Because her stomach was so weakened by useless drugging that she could not eat, Mrs. Mary H. Walters, of St. Clair street, Columbus, O., was literally starving to death. She writes: 4'My stomach was so weak from useless drugs that I could not eat, and my nerves so wrecked that I could not sleep; and not before I was given up to die was I induced to try Electric Bitters; with the wonderful result that improvement began at once, and a complete cure followed." The sixteen-year-old daughter of George Waddell, a farmer near Fremont, Wayne county, N. C., v,*as murdered Sunday afternoon, and her body thrown in a marl pit, where it was found the same da}*. Miss Waddell left her home at 4 o'clock in the after noon to visit Miss Holland, who lives half a mile from the Waddell family. Late in the afternoon when she failed to return, her father went to inquire about her, and learned that she had not been to the place. Search was then instituted, and the body was found floating on the surface of the water in the marl pit in the field near her home. An examination of the body showed numerous bruises and scratches, and the condition of her neck made it clear that she had been strangled. The circumstances indicated that the girl had been outraged. Her umbrella lay near the pit and the ground showed that a struggle had taken place. There is intense excitement in the surrounding country, but there is no clue as to the murderer.
