Witt spent a few days in Asheville last week. The friends of Mr. C. H. Corbitt sympathize with him in the loss of his mother who died at Salley last Friday. Miss Sallie Rast entertained a few of her friends last Friday evening at her home. Delicious ices and cakes were served and a pleasant time was spent. Mt9? Rosa Rutherford of Mt. Willing, Saluda county, is visiiing her sister, Mrs. C. B. Dowling here. Mrs. Herbert, of Orangeburg, who is superintendent of the Christian Temperance Workers of this State, lectured to an attentive audience at the Methodist church yesterday morning and again at the Baptist church last evening. Mrs. Herbert is an attractive speaker and one listening to her voice, and looking upon her snowy locks, and then into her gentle face cannot fail to see reflected there some of the glory of the great work to which she has devoted money, time and energy. A union of about fifty-five members was organized, and it is the desire of all true Christians that the cause of temperance may be furthered here where it is so much needed. Mr. W. L. Brooker who has had charge of the summer school at Barnwell for Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties is at home for a few weeks. Miss Clara Johnson left for Scotia last week for several days visit. A series of meetings will be held at the Baptist church next week, commencing Sunday. Rev. W. W. Williams, of North, is to conduct these services, and everybody is cordially invited to attend. C. Another very pleasant Summer School term has come and gone. Much interest was manifested by the teacher-pupils present. Profs. Major AIIati wpppi nn.animouslv thanked. for their earnestness of purpose, fullness of sympathy, and the brightness thrown on every detail of the work, by those present at the close. Our Educational Board provided most earnest and enthusiastic lecturers for this Summer School season, viz: Profs. Patterson Wardlaw, and Hand of South Carolina University. Prof. Daniel of Clemson College. And we were favored with an address from one of our native, and worthy instructors in the cause of education. Arthur F. Harman, now of Ala. This was a beautiful and direct appeal to every teacher. We hope with the arrival of another Summer School season there will be three times as many of our teachers present as were this year. Fellow teachers this is the way we can keep in touch with the best pedagogical methods. And we as teachers wield a mighty influence in character building. Supt. J. E. R. Kyzer was present at the close, and offered words of enthusiasm, and inspiration. Immediately after the close of the Summer School?a County Association for the Improvement of Rural Schools was organized. Supt. Kyzer was asked to act as Chairman. Every teacher-pupil present became a member of this Association named. "The Woman's Association for the Improvement of Rural Schools in South Carolina. The officers are president, Miss Sue H. Corley; vice-president, Miss Epie Roof; Sec. and Treas. Miss Ellen Hendrix; Executive committee,Misses Lizzie Seay, Bertha Kleckley, Dora Shirey and Mary Wingard. The last named was appointed Chairman of said committee. The constitution of County Association for the Improvement of Rural Schools was adopted as given in booklet issued by Supt. 0. B. Martin with one or two amendments. It is hoped each member of this Association will carry this movement into his or her school; thereby causing great improvement in our schools.
