Four of them wants to repeal the '"Brice Law," and to retain ^ the dispensaries. A Negro Boy Who Attempted an Assault on a Little Seven-Year-Old White Girl in Saluda County was Taken from the Train Monday Evening at Summerland Station and was Hung and Riddled with Bullets. Batesburg, Aug. 20.?Dan Etheredge, the negro boy about 15 years old who attempted to assault Loretta West, the seven-year-old daughter of Maj. J. Hillery West, was shot to death by a mob about nine miles from Summerland tonight at 9 o'clock. Etheredge was caught at Ward9 by Mr. H. G. Wright, the correspondent of The State at that place, and was at once identified by Maj. West, who was not far off when the capture was effected. He was placed on Southern train, No. 134, coming towards Columbia and at Summerland, just a a mile below Batesburg, was taksn off and carried about nine miles. There a mob of about 150 men met him. The little negro was placed in the middle of the road, under a tree with a rope around his neck. He was asked if he had anything to say and if he wa9 guilty. He said that he was guilty, but would give no reason for the attempt. r After a parley of about 15 minutes, about a dozen of the posse stepped forward and emptied their guns and pistols into the body. The negro fell backward literally shot to pieces while the mob at once dispersed, going back to their homes, tired after their long chase. STORY OF THE CRIME. Thursday he enticed the little girl to the barn to help him feed the cattle. As soon as she was inside he seized her and attempted to choke her into insensibility. He did not succeed in 1 accomplishing his purpose, but she 1 was badly hurt and for two days her life was in danger. The news of the crime did not spread very rapidly outside of the immediate neighborhood, which is about 15 miles from railroad and telegraph facilities, but a quiet search was made for the boy. Gradually the news leaked out, however, and a general search was made all over the county for the criminal by a number of posses. There was no chance for him to escape. The description had been sent all over the county and in ?yery band were those who knew the negro by sight. Major West has been on horseback and in a buggy since Thursday night 'and the others have had very little sleep. Eugene Merritt, a negro convict, was drowned while bathing in Black river, in Florence county, on Saturday, his shackles pulling him under the water. The ice cream festival at Irene Saturday night was a grand success. Splendid music was rendered by the ; Irene brass brand, and every one i present enjoyed themselves.
