|L Candy Factory Collapses. W Greenville, Aug. 8.?Almost withf out warning the brick store house [ 'k occupied by a candy factory collapsed here this afternoon. No one was caught in the falling debris, though it is thought remarkable that the inmates of the place escaped. . The coallapse was caused dv an exca- j J vation being made on the side of the 1 f wall by the contractors, who were fey erecting a new building of the Bank t v: of Commerce. The damage is estiP mated at between $4,000 and $5,000. It is not known where the damage will fall. The contractors claim that the candy factory building was improperly constructed, while on the other hand it is asserted by owners of the wrecked structure that the contractors had no ^ right to carry the excavation so close to the factory wall. The Bank of |f Commerce occupied temporary quarters in the same building and was forced to move. ? -;4. , 9 , | ^ WANTED?By Chicago wholesale and mail order house, assistant manager (man or woman) for this county and adjoining territory. An Open Letter. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Gentlemen taxpayers, what do you think? Hear we are on the eve of an election and the only talk is the liquor business, dispensary and prohibition. "i- .1 ^ 1 J_ 11.^ U + Well, Croa maue wie muuu uauixcvi about stuff in the grain and gave man the wisdom to get it out. God said all things were good. Now the prohibitionist want to put what God made and gave to man out of man's reach, but will never do it. We cannot do away with all that man can sin by. Then the dispensarites want to give the whole control to a few men. We all know it is nature for man to work for his own interest and it seems that there are few that are strictly honest. The liquor business is one of the largest businesses of our State and to put it in the hands of a few men and say to other citizens, "keep your hands off," looks like we are coming to monarchal government. We have some experience of the dispensary law. Commissioners have been accused of fraud, which 48 bad on us, then comes an investigating committee costing its thousands of dollars which is piled on the poor taxpayers. I am no candidate, nor no wise man, but it looks like any simpleton can see how things are going. I have seen the time when any man that chose could put up a distillery or run a bar room and there was no more drunkenness then than now. Men then drank pure stuff and did not go crazy from poison in the drink. I heard the "daddy" of the dispensary say give him control of the stuff and he would pay half the taxes with it, but taxes have been on the rise and this year, I suppose, to pay this investigating committee, we will have our assessments raised and our oaths as to valuation raised?another step , towards monarchy. Think about it, if any man who chose to sell it was allowed to sell and was charged a reasonable license say only in incorporated towns, each dealer would strive to sell purer liquor at as low a price as possible to meet his competitors, then if we are fools enough to buy and drink it is our own fault, if a fault. As it is the man who don't drink is taxed to run the business same as the one who drinks. Some say; Oh, the dispensary is such a help to education. Well, it has been said, educate the negro you spoil a good plow hand. Now, I tell you, the white boy is not far behind the negro in that, but take the boy who has worked out his education himself?he is worth three times the boy that is educated by the public. Now the liquor is here afid is as good as anything else in its place. Even Christ made it at the marriage feast and it was pronounced good. It is offtimes the doctor's last resort to save life and it is as everything else, we can sin by it if we choose and a man should have his choice. God gives him the right to sin if he chooses, but does not will it. Getting drunk is no more sin than the eating of the forbidden fruit by Adam. Noah got drunk, it don't say he sinned, but a mark was put on his son who made sport or laughed at his nakedness. So you that'8 making a big boo hoo about the liquor business best look j out. G. W. Reeder. I Edmund. S. C.. Auenst 2. Gives Up to Die. B. Spiegel, 1204 N. Virginia street, j Eyansville, Ind., writes: "For over five years I was troubled with kidney and bladder affections which caused me much pain and worry. I lost flesh and was all run down, and a year ago had to abandon work entirely. I had three of the best physicians who did me no good iind I was practically given up to die. Foley's Kidney Cure was recommended and the first bottle gave me great relief, and after taking the second bottle I was entirely cured." The Kaufmann Drug Co. Baptist Condemn Dispensary System. Easley, Aug. 11.?The Piedmont Baptist association convened at Easley August 2 and was in session for two days. The report on temperance came up for discussion the second day. The report was prepared and read by Rev. D. W. Hiott and very strongly condemned the liquor traffic and the dispensary came in for a full share. A resolution was passed unanimousCleanses the system thoroughly and clears sallow complexions of * pimples and blotches. / It is guaranteed lv by the association declaring that after more than 12 months experience with prohibition since the dispensari; s , have been voted out of this section, "we are delighted with the beneficial results." This association is composed of churches located in both Anderson and Pickens counties and embraces one of the most enlightened and progressive agricultural sections of the State. Both these counties are overwhelming against the State dispensary and will send solid delegations to the legislature opposed to the institution and in favor of local option. Household Help On Strike. A special from Newberry, S. C., to the Augusta Chronicle states that there is evidently a strike on with the cooks, washerwomen and other colored labor in that section. It is believed that the recognized leaders in negro organizations are responsible for the "strike". The police authorities are keenly studying the situation, as the vagrancy laws on the local statute books are very stringent. How to Avoid Appendicitis. I had many of the symptoms of hay fever, and a doctor's prescription did not reach my case, and I took several medicines which seemed to only aggravate my case. Fortunately I insisted upon having Foley's Honey and Tar and it quickly cured me. My wife has since used Foley's Honey and Tar with the same success." The Kaufman Drug Co. 2,000 Ken Arrested. 3t. Petersburg, Russia, August 9.? News from the provinces today is re assuring. The revolutionary agitation has slackened owing to wholesale arrests. It is estimated that 2,000 Social Democrats have been placed under arrest recently. In the capital everything is quiet. At Moscow the revolutionary movement seems to be checked temporarily. In Ekaterinoslaw and Poltava dis- j tricts, peasants are suffering greatly from famine. Crops have been excel- j lent, but the land owners cannot sell corn even at low prices and the peasants are unable to pay anything for it. Enormous quantities of corn are simply rotting in the fields, while women and children throughout the districts are starving. Submit Petition for Impeachment. Martin of the Oconee circuit of the sunerior court of Georrria was ore JL" ' - J. sented before the house of representatives today and a committee was named to consider and report upon the petition. The petition alleges that Judge Martin has abused his office in the restraining of certain orders in a case involving the Commercial hotel at Fitzgerald, Ga., and that by reason of such delay the owners of the property suffered a loss of $3,000. 9 Wood's Seeds FOR FALL SOWING.
