Prof. Patterson Wardlaw of -the University of South Carolina will address the teachers of the County Summer School and all persons interested in the oause of education, this evening, Wednesday, at 8:15 o'clock. The lecture will be held in the court house. All persons are invited and are urged to attend. Cooner and Miss Ola Thompson were happily married at Pendleton, Anderson county, the home of the bride, on July 25th, 1906. Mr. Cooner is one of Batesburg's prominent young business men, and the bride is a popular young lady of her town. She has been one of the accomplished teachers of the Batesburg Graded school for several terms * and is very popular there. Saturday was the day fixed for the barbecue at Rishton and Messrs. Gantt and Spradley certainly served a first- class dinner. The people of that community were out and all enjoyed the day with the candidates. Present were: E. J. Etheredge, Paul E. Hutto, J. Brooks Wingard, W. H. Sharps, for tlje House; A. D. Martin, Esq., for Judge of Probate; Frank W. Shealy, H. L. Oswald for County Treasurer; Geo. A. Shealy for County Supervisor, and Sam'l. J. Derrick for County Auditor, most of whom spoke and were well received. / mm Gamblers Caught. Sheriff P. H. Corley having been notified of a party of gamblers from Columbia and the town of Brookland habitually violating the Sabbath in gambling on the banks of the river on the Lexington side, and he always alert as to performance of duty, made all arrangements and on Sunday, accompanied by Messrs. Rion Graham, of our town, and State Constables Eison, Harling, Kibler and Branson, and Willie Smoak, of Columbia, went otfer in the afternoon, and going up the river deployed forces and at a proper signal they swooped down on the party of gamblers. Nine in number, all white, who were caught in the act, were arrested. Thes sheriff and assistants brought them over to jail. The majority of them have given bond for their appearance at court, others are still in jail. The .Teachers' Summer School. The Lexington County Summer School for Teachers opened Monday with a very good attendance despite the fact that it was raining all the morning. The teachers are comfortably located, and both they and the instructors are hard at work. Prof. Allen giving courses in physiology and arithmetic and Prof. Major, in ^pedagogy and civil government. Those in attendance up to Tuesday are: Misses Sue Corley, Anice Bouknight, Bertha Kleckley, Emma Koon, Lizzie Seay, Ellen Hendrix, Rosa Belle Fallaw, Annie Estelle Harman, Leila Hendrix, Eppie Roof, Kezie George, Hattie Cromer, Annie Harsey, Mincey Pound, Ella Harman, Hessie Harman, Blanche Roof, Mary C. Wingard, Marcella Jeffcoat, Carrie Corley, Dora Shirey and Messrs W. D. Hill, J. Olin Crout, F. W. Rauch. This number will be increased m tne progress of the school. We are pleased to have with us Profs. Major and Allen. They are gentlemen of culture and ability and thoroughly imbued with their work. H&yss 'Cu??August. Don't fail to attend the big barbecue at Ioor Hayes' on August 4th. This will be one of the best 'cues of the season. There will be plenty to feed the crowd; the dinner will be served in a nice, cool, dry place. The Hon. A. F. Lever and several of the State candidates will be present to address you. The Ladies String Band of Ethan .will furnish music for the entire day; the photographer will be present to serve you. Refreshments of all kinds will be served and the trains stop both ways for passengers. Come and enjoy the best barbecue dinner you ever ate. My attention has been called to the fact that the proviso to the general act of 1900, providing for the election of County Commissioners in Lexington and some other counties by the qualified electors has not been repealed by subsequent acts, as it was at first supposed. Hence the commissioners for Lexington county cannot be appointed under the general law, but must be voted for in the general election and must go into the primary. It is now too late to call the executive committee to meet and fix the f assessment, and I will assume the responsibility of fixing the assessment at $2.00, successful candidates to pay $1.00 more, subject to approval of the committee at its next meeting. Pledges must be filed and assessments paid by August 7th, to myself or F. H. Hendrix, Leesville, but announcemonk in njmers mav be made any time afterward.
