5ot7c1 Complaint in Children.'
During the summer months children
are subject to disorders of the bowels
which should receive careful attention
as scon as tbo first unnatural looseness
of the bowels appears. The best medicine
in use for bowel complaint is Chamberlain's
Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea
Remedy as it promptly controls any unnatural
looseness of the bowels. For

An Ideal Farmer.
Batesburg Advocate, July 20.
On last Monday Mr. M. E. Rutland
pulled a cotton blossom from a ten
acre field of stubble cotton that had
just been planted three weeks to the
day. This cotton is of the celebrated
King variety?the earliest variety yet
known to man. This is no joke; we
saw it pulled witn our own eyes (ana
it did not come from a volunteer
stalk, either), but from a stalk that
had been planted only three weeks,
and from a field that had been gathered
already this year, 60 bushels of
oats per acre.
Besides the ten acres of cotton
mentioned above, Mr. Rutland has
fifty acres, that is, despite the heavy
rains that have fallen for the past six
weeks, lapping the middles and will
110 doubt make over a bale to the acre.
On this farm there is ten acres of
the finest corn that has ever been
seen in this section, and it is estimated
that it will make at least 100 bushels
to the acre.

Saved His Comrade's Life.
"While returning from the Grand
Army Encampment at Washington City,
a comrade from Elgin, 111., was taken
with cholera morbus and was in a critical
condition," says Mr. J. E. Hou^hland,
of Eldon, Iowa. "I gave hirii
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea
Remedy and believe saved his life.
I have been engaged for ten years in
immigration work and conducted many
parties to the south and west. I always
carry this remedy and have used it successfullv
on manv occasions." Sold by

Shooting Live Pigeons.
The Fourth of July there was a live
pigeon shoot at Glendale, under the
management of a Spartanburg gun
club. According to the report of the
scores about S00 pigeons were used,
j Nearly all these were killed or crip
j pled. Boys with guns stooa on ine
i outside of the line and killed nearly
[ e\vry one that escaped the members
' of the elub. Several counties were
(represented among the contestants.
They were, good and worthy men and
should not have/ indulged in such
cruel sport. The killing of birds or
animals that are harmless unless for
food is wrong. President Roosevelt
set the country a had example when
he went out West and shot boh cats,
Mexican lions and Colorado bears,
that were doing no harm in their
i
wilderness homes. Such cruel sport
hardens one and blunts and even destroys
all the tender sympathies of
the human heart. No good comes
| from shooting pigeons. The practice
is worth nothing to the gunner. One
| day in the field at the proper season
| behind a good dog is better training
than a week's shooting at pigeons. j
If there is a law to prevent this cruel
sport it should be enforced. If there
is none the General Assembly should
*
j enact one at the next session.?Carolina

Court Has Sustained Board of
Education.
'Associate Justice Woods has render
( ed a decision Jn the injunction proceedings
brought by W. H. Duncan,
a taxpayer of Barnwell, against the
State Board of Education, in which
an effort was made to prevent the
board from creating a central depository
for school books.
The court decided that the act was j
broad enough to allow this action and
sustained the board throughout.
The central depository has been
awarded the R. L. Bryan Company
and it is presumed since this decision
has been made by the court that there
will be no further proceedings.

Mr. Lever's Candidacy.
Hon. A. F. Lever, whose card appears
in this issue of the Evening
News, announces himself as a candidate
for re-election to the 60th Congress.
It is a high compliment to
him that he makes this race unopposed.
There can be no doubt but
that there are numbers of capable
and popular men in the district who
wrmlrl likft to succeed him in Con
gress, but his work in that body has
been so successful and consistent as
to inspire in the public mind great
confidence in his devotion to the interests
of the people. This fact has
deterred others from entering the
race, and is a high testimonial to his
fidelity to the trust the people have
reposed in him. Mr. Lever is a man
who does things. There is every probability
that Sumter will soon have a
forty thousand dollar public building
and Orangeburg as soon as Free Delivery
has been established will not j
be forgotten. Indeed we are assured !
that our city is next on the list. The
voters of this district owe it, therefore
not only to themselves, but to
Mr. Lever, that they give him a full
vote in the coming primary. Don't
neglect to vote for Lever, because
there is 110 opposition, and his nomination
is assured, but vote for him
that he may know that he has ti e
endorsement of the people in all that
lie is trying to do for them.?Orangeburg
