Wednesday, July 11, 1906. 2TEGR0ES FREE FROM AIZE2T TAIL. Murder of Mrs. Wilson Remains a Deep Mystery. Aiken, June 30.?Ben Lanford and I Tom Williams, two negroes charged with the murder of Mrs. Cecelia R. Wilson in her home in Beech Island, were put up on trial for their lives. The evidence for the prosecution was based upon the finding of tracks near the window through which Mrs. Wilson was shot which witnesses testified corresponded to shoes which the defendants were found wearing, while the defence brought evidence to the effect that Wilson was cruel to his wife.. The question arose as to whether the shot had been fired in the room or on the outside. Mrs. Wilson was killed while asleep in her room about 2 o'clock on the morning of May 23. She was lying with her back to the window and the shot took effect in the left shoulder. Mrs. Wilson was the iwife of Mr. E. S. Wilson, a prominent farmer and merchant in Beech Island. This case has excited a good deal of * ? m < i -i xi interest, me question Deing wneiner i Mrs. Wilson was killed by her husband or some one on the outside of the house. The defense proved beyond doubt an alibi and good character of the negroes. The Sheriff testified that he had carefully measured the tracks and that they did not correspond at all. The jury brought in a verdict of not guilty and so the identity of the murderer of Mrs. Wilson is still a mystery. Editor Record: Will you kindly call attention through your columns to the reunion of the cavalry and horse artillery of the armies of Northern Virginia and of the Potomac, to be held at Brandy Station, August 9, 1906, commemorative of the numerous engagements that occurred between them at that place during the war between the States. Every veteran of either army will remember Brandy Station. We are anxious that notice of this gathering will i*each every one. The First and Second South Carolina cavalry and Hart's Battery of horse artillery and perhaps other commands from your State participated in one or more of these battles. We will be glad to have with us on that occasion as many of the survivors of these gallant commands as practicable. The beautiful new Baptist church at Brookland was destroyed Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in a severe hail and wind storm. This church was burned in the big fire of May 4, 1905, and the congregation had worked valiantly to replace it. Contributions had been made by many friends and the work Qf replacing the building had progressed to the stage of weather boarding. The loss is complete, amounting to about $1,800. The building was insured against fire and lightning only. The congregation announced last | night that they are undaunted and will rebuild. This will require the aid j of funds to be contributed by others. Rev. S. Stephens is pastor and Dr. W. R. Lowe is the treasurer. ' This was not the only damage from the stprm in New Brookland. Several other buildings were slightly damaged, including the Masonic temple, owned by M. H. Witt and the residences of Jas. McCrady and A. D. Shull.-State. Mr. J. S. Gunell, the intendant of New Brookland, appeals to the general public for help to rebuild the church for these worthy people, and while they appreciate all the expressions of sympathy they want it in a substantial form of dollars and cents and the people should respond to aid them in rebuilding their church. Feeling Impending Doom. The C., N. and L. through freight train, No. 85, north bound, has been put on a new schedule, effective today, that clips two hours from its running time. The reduction has been made possible by the arrival of a new modern locomotive fresh from the Baldwin shops. Instead of leaving # Columbia at 1 a. m. as heretofore the train now leaves here at 3 a. m., arriving in Laurens at its former schedule time, 6:55. Returning, the old schedule will be retained, the train leaving Laurens at 5:10 p. m., and reaching Columbia at 9:20. Haskell Dial of Laurens and John Francis O'Mara of Charleston have been appointed assistant paymasters in the navy. George Smalls, colored, has been held by the coroner's jury charged with the murder of Grace Capers, a negro woman, in Charleston Tuesday. Prof. L. T. Baker principal of the Winnsboro graded schools, has been elected to fill the new chair in the new department of pedagogy of the University of South Carolina. A Tragic Finish. A watchman's neglect permitted a leak in the great North Sea dyke, which a child's finger could have stopped, to become a rxuiious break, devastating an entire province of Holland. Jernigan, young white men, had a difficulty in Laurens on Thursday.. Parks fired three times at Jernigan at close range, and missed him every time.
