xne organization was completed
and on motion of Dr. E. J. Etheredge
the temporary officers were made
permanent. *
Mr. Sbarpe thanked the convention
for oonfering the honor of presiding
over the body of the Democracy of
Lexington county. And referred very
feelingly to the conditions or complexion
of the convention of today to
that of twenty-five yearB ago, mentioning
the* prominent men of our
county he had f|et there, and who
had since passed over the river, and
today he met in their plaoes a young
Democracy, he trusted would prove
as true and faithfuj as those gone before
in the interest of their country,
and with their aid and council the
work could only prove successful. We
today commence the work of another
campaign, one of importance, great
questions which call for statesmen
of nerve and judgment, men who
would reflect credit on the party and
its principles. He was glad to see in
the convention despite the inelemett
weather znen from a distance which
showed that they were willing to
perform their duty as citizens and as
Democrats. With your aid we will
have a campaign that will give us
good officers for our county. Let us
hive forebearance, good temper and
be rneD, and all will be well. Again,
I mast thank you for the honor you
have conferred upon me, and .1 take
it as a reward for my faithful work
in the party. I have always been
true, even in defeat I remained the
same fo my party and my people.
My positions are known and you have
my services?applauded. I now declare
the convention ready for work.
The election of county chairman and
delegates to the State convention.

The vote cast for several of the
gentlemen were without contest, and
merely complementary. The names
of F. }J.. Hendrix, C M Efird, R. L.
Keisler, Geo- Bell Timmerman and
Col. D. J. Griffith were also placed
in nomination but they all declined.
Mr. W. B Taylor nominated C. M.
Efird, Esq, for county chairman, and
Mr. W. Aug. Shealy, placed in nomination
Dr. E J Er>heredge.
H. A. SpanD, W. L. Wise and W.
D. Dent were appointed tellers. The
result of the election was: Efird, 91;
Etheredge, 27.
Upon bis election as county chairman,
Hon. 0. M. Efird was presented
to the convention by the president,
and responded feelingly, saying, that
he fully appreciated the honor that
was conferred upon him, that he
made the \ race for chairman only
upon the solicitation of his friends
who urged that he could be of service
to the county just at this time. He
bad not the slightest personal feeling
against the few who saw fit to vote
against him and he was a personal
friend of the gentleman who opposed
him, and of his entire family. He
predicted that th8 coming campaign
would be a hotly contested one, possibly
more hotly contested thau any
election bad been for some years.
Bat, notwithstanding that fact be
proposed to devote his best efforts to^
seeibg that an honorable campaign
was conducted and a fair count of
the vote had. A hard light, but fair
play was to be tbe watchword. The
speaker also predicted that the diepen
sary question would be the permount
issue and placed himself
squarely in favor of the dispensary.
He declared that if the dispensary
carried this election then the Brice
law would be repealed, but if the
dispensary failed then the State dispensary
would be abolished. He
closed, again thanking the convention
for the confidence placed in him
and urged all to do their full duty to
their county in the approaching election.
He closed amid applause.
Col. D. J. Grifii h was elected State

response to calls for him he thanked
the convention for so highly honoring
him, saying he would endeavor
to do as he had in the past, serve
them faithfully and to the best of his
ability. In closing be renewed his
pledge to and advocacy of the principles
of Democracy. He was heartily
applauded ou tbkicg his seat.
