Notes from Newberry College.
To the Editor of the Dispatch:
Base ball is all the go. Newberry
I has not lost a single game in the
1 association this year. Oar boys are
in good hopes of again winning the
championship.
, Dr. James A. B Scherer has re?
turned from bis trip in the North.
Previous to this last trip made by
him, Dr. Pierson, of Chicago, offered
Newberry college $25,000 on terms
-? * " i TT_
that we raise a nxea amount. ne |
has cot as yet reported what amount
we are to raise. Dr. Piersoo is a very
old man. fie has been a Christian
worker ail his life and, as he is expecting
soon to pass away from this
world into eternal life, he wishes to
donate a portion of his worldly goods
to some Christian cause. Oa the last
trip made by Dr. Scherer, Mr. Andrew
Carnegie, of New Tori:, offers
to the Techclogical Department of
oar college a sum of $10,000 on conditions
that they raise an equal
amount. This money, unlike that
offered by Mjr. John D. Rockefeller,
as far as w^re able to judge, will
come to us as untainted money. It is
only left to us to decide whether or
not we are willing to receive tnis 01fer.
We can only show our appreciation
of these grand offers by sacrificing
a small portion of our abundances.
What a grand opportunity this is for
us to make Newberry college one
among the greatest in the South.
The gymnasium building is almost
complete. It has been covered, the
floor has been lain and saBh has been
i
put in the windows. All that is
needed yet is to put on the finishing
touch and then it will be ready for
the necessary equipments on the
interior.
Mr. W. E. Monte, a member of the
present junior class and who has been
in bad for nearly one week on account
of the measles, is improving rapidly.
We hope to see him out on the
campus iu a few days. Dr. Pelham
gave him careful aud skillful treatment
while he was at bis worst.
Mrs. D. F. Efird, from near Lexington,
S. G, who had been visiting
Mrs. S. J. Derrick, her sister, and
Mrs. J. H. Hiller, from the Pine
Ridge section, who also was a guest
of Mrs. Derrick, left for their respective
homes yesterday. Hon. D. F.
Efird paid us a visit in the Chapel
the next morning after he brought
his wife up here. We are always
glad to see our L?xiugton friends
among us.
Mr. B. F. Chapman, our representative
from Newberry college to
the later-Collegiate Oratorical Contest
to be held at Greenwood, S. C, tonight,
left today on the noon train.
He is a member of the present senior
class, and also a member of thePhrenakosmian
Literary society. He was
accompanied by a number of college
students. v
Drs. James A. B. Scherer, A. J.
Bowers and E B. S&tzler have gone
to attend the Newberry conference
at Bethlehem church, near Pomaria, .
S. C It is probable that Mr. J.
Irby Jioon and a few otfcer students
of the college will go down tonight or
tomorrow.
One of the most exciting games of
base ball of the season was played
here on Saturday 28th with the Clemson
team. The game was intensely
interesting from start to finish. The
result of the game was 6 to 8 in favor
of Newberry.
Much success to the Dispatch and
