Shooting Affair in Greenville.
Ben Wells waylaid Deputy Sheriff
Eli Pittman in Greenville on Saturday
night last and ebot him seven times.
The Deputy Sheriff returned the fire
and killed Wells instantly. Pittman
has since died from his wounds.
Wells had been night watchman and
had been discharged because he was
suspected of selling liquor and he
blamed Pittman of informing against
him.
Everybody would want to tell the
truth if it did the work better than
a lie.

Death of Capt. J. H. Counts.
Capt. J. Henry Counts after eeveral
weeks illdess, a general colapse, from
an active and industrious life, died at
bis home, near Irroo, last Sunday
morning, in the 67th year of bis 8ge.
Capt. Counts was one of our progressive
and enterprising citizens,
who always identified himself with
the agricultural and best interest of
Lexington county and her citizens,
occupying the presidency of the Lexington
County Agricultural Society
during its first eeveral terms, with
ability and wise judgment.
He ably served as our representative
in the General Assembly from

record, broad-minded and fair in bis
news, and a diligent worker in the
interest of bis county and constituency.
He was once only defeated by
seven votes for County Supervisor,
mcl would have made an efficient
officer.
He was a true, brave and faithful
Confederate soldier of Co. H, 13fch
Regiment, ever ready to perform his
duties whenever called. He was also
i prompt and faithful member of
Camp Steadman U. C. V. 664, of this
place.
In his loss Lexington county truly
loses a devout Christian gentleman,
prompt and ective in the performance
of all duties as a citizen. In
fact we have few better men than
Capt. J. H. Counts. But he is gone

friends who choee to reach a better
plac3 prepared for them, where peace
and happiness ever reigns and Borrow
is unknown.
On Monday his remains were interred
in the cemetery of Union
Methodist church at Irmo, S. C, of
which be had been an efficient officer
for many years.
The interment took place with
Masonic honors, brethren of his own j
Sinclair Lodge and Lexington Lodge,
performing those sad rites. The
large attendance at his funeral of
friends and neighbors gave evidence
of tbe high esteem in which he wa3
held in bis community.
He leaves a beloved wife, relatives
and friends to morn his loss, and
truly can we add a good maD, a loyal
citizen and a kind neighbor has left
ue, for that place not made with
hands eternal in the heavens?the
eternal and ever blessed home of the

soul of the pure and the just.
Peace to his sacred ashes.
