Tbe Columbia Record of April 23,
says:
Representative Lever is in receipt
of letters from M. B Edwards,
mayor of Batesburg; S. S Lioder,
intendant of the town of Gilbert; J.
J. Taylor, mayor of Lexington, and
R E. AUeD, mayor of Augusta, commending
bim for the interest be has
recently been taking in the matter o?
having a mail agent placed on tbe
train leaving Columbia for Augusta
in tbe afternoon.
All of tbese letters are to the effect
that tbe growth of tbe section between
Columbia, and Augusta in re
cent years has been very rapid and
that presed conditions amply justify
tho placing of a mail clerk on the
train mentioned.

The above mail service which will
add to the -business interest along
this read. With the regular passenger
train which goes into effect
next Sunday morning instead of a
mixed train, will be a great convenience
to our people.

in a substantial manner is
going out to the citizens of San Francisco,
who suffered so severely in the

by fire and disease. This awful
calamity will ever be remembered by
I her stricken people, destroying their
business, homes, etc., almost wiping
out one of the most beautiful business
cities of the far West, and leaving
everything in ruins and her population
in actual need of something
to eat and drink, to say nothing of
the great financial loss, precious lives
that have passed away and they
standing helpless to witness heartrending
scenes and terrible destruction
before their eyes, everybody
terror stricken and frenzied. But
the people of the once proud "Golden
Gate city" are clearing away debris
and preparing to rebuild.Speaking
of the recent gambling
case at Saluda the Anderson Mail
says:
Judge George E Prince has a

who will gamble with a negro. Judge
Prince's sentiments will be endorsed
by every self-respecting white man
and by every self-respecting negro.
Negroes do not respect a white man
who puts himself cn their level, and
it is always the low white men who
cause the conflicts between the races.
Tee, let us have the boxes at the
primary polls where the question at
least can be settled in the Democratic
party, whether we have "no
liquor" or dispensary. We are satisfied
we can get the sentiment of our
people this way. We have had a
number of our people pro and con to
express themselves as approving of
the plan. It carries no expense and
leaves this all important moral question
with the people directly.

We have not learned what members
from our county joined the party on
the trip.
The coast defense squadron for
sometime resting in the harbor at
Charleston left there Saturday for
Norfolk and Philadelphia.
Florence, S. C, is to hsve the State
Reformatory. Such was the decision
reached by the board of trustees of
the institution at a meeting held a
few days ago.
Saluda has voted railroad bonds to
build the Middle Carolina and Western
railway from Greenwood to
Saluda, &3., and all the preliminaries
as to contract, etc., have been arranged.

Official count of the election held
last week in Aiken county, under
special act, to decide the question of
holding county courts in said county
W88 yeas ^18, nays 548. The vote
was a light one, being only 766, yet
the opposition won by a good majority.
So Aiken will continue in the
circuit court with her criminal dockets

The green tree?, tbe beautiful
flowers and the sweet songs of birds
remind us that we will soon be in
the midst of pleasant spring?the
happiest season of the year. A soul
in which these things cannot awaken
new life and bestir new energies
must be dead iodeed.
Cotton planting is progressing
nicely, and if the fertilizer output is
any indication, efforts are being made
for a heavy cotton crop. The recent
rise in the price of cotton stimulated
sales considerably, but there is more
behind which is being held for twelve
cents. We hope different but we
fear a twelve cents price is not very
close at hand.
Town Marshals Boozer and Sheaiy
get a move on them Sunday and
Monday and bagged only four. There
are others that should have met tbe

that will not soon be erased.
Bennie Boubnight climbed up to a
crow's nest a few days ago and fell
about twenty feet and was badly
hurt, but he seems to be all right
again.
Capt. J. H. Counts is quite feeble
but able to be out occasionally.

An Old Soldier Gone.
Mr. Edwin King, residing near
Macedon, this couDty, died Saturday
after several weeks illness in the 74th
year of his age. He leaves a wife,
relatives and friendt3 to mourn his
loss. Mr. King was a good man and
kind neighbor. He never interferred
with other people's bueiness, but
attended in a quiet way to that cf
his own. He was a member of Com,
pany K. 20th Regt; a faithful soldier
ever ready to perform his duties
whenever called, but he has marched
to the last tap of the drum here and
gone to join those of his old comrades
who had preceded him to a
better land where there are no pestilence
and wars, but peace and b?pi
piness. His remains were interred
at the Ulark burying ground on Sunday.

pastorate are hereby invited to meet
at the new parsonage on May let for
the purpose of building a fence and
doing some other needed work.
