Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Case of Hydrophobia. Aiken, April 11?On a crowded trolley car, between Augusta and Aiken, tonight a panic was caused by the discovery that one of the passengers was suffering with hydrophobia. The man, James Howard, * TT ? * is said to be from isew lorn ana is unknown in tbiB section. The car coming from Augusta was crowded with women and children, wbo were greatly excited by ihe discovery, and the struggle which ensued when it was attempted to put cif the passenger. Howard was with a friend, named Hayes, also from New York. They had been standing on the rear platform of the car talking, but Howard went inside and when the car reached Warrenville the conductor noticed that the passenger was in a peculiar condition. He tried to arouse him but could not and notified the other passenger with home he had been seen talking. It required the utmost exertions of several passengers to control him, but be was Anally put off the car when it reached Graniteville, and was tied with a strong rope. The authorities were notifled and for the time he was lefi lying on the ground. A physician was summoned who administered chloroform and he was then taken into a small boat bouse. He has recovered from the effects of the chloroform administered yesterduy and today he was alternately unconscious and conscious. He is still tied and is constantly watched. He has drank water and milk today and this morning he wae able to take some soup. He has a few dollars and is accompanied by three friends. Eut two physicians who have examined him say that be has all the symptoms of rabies. The county authorities are caring for him, although very little is being done, as people are afraid to approach or touch him. Howard's friend, James Hayes, states that Howard was bitten by a dog at Midville, Ga., ten days ago, and that the dog was then killed. Howard went to the hospital in Augusta for treatment, having a bad wound on his leg. If it was suspected that the dog was mad it was not made known and it seems that there was no suspicion that Howard was likely to have hydrophobia. He was on his way to Aiken tonight, and from here expected to go to Charleston. He and Hayes are railway linemen and have been at that work io Georgia. Grip Quickly Enocked Out. It is a new one to us?one that we never thought of in connection with the dispensary agitation. While we have no desire to enter upo<i an argument on the question, if it is shown. with reasonable certainty that blind tiger liquor has a greater evil tffect upon negroes than dispen eary whiskey (which we believe is a fact,) and since prohibition means blind tigerism, an admission made even by Senator Brice, the very practical question will arise whether it will not be better, for the efficiency of our farm labor, to hold to the dispensary rather than to have an indiscriminate sale of the vilest and deadliest stuff If we were in a position in Colombia to make an investigation of the matter mentioned, we would be glad of the opportunity, whether it produced results in our favor or not. To the presidents of the respective Democratic Clubs of Lexington County: The State Democratic Executive Committee has called a Convention of the Democratic party of South Carolina to be held on May 16 ;h according to the constitution. You will please call a meeting of your respective clubs Saturday, April 28, as provided in the constitution for the purpose of organizing for the next two years, and elect delegates to the County Convention to be held at Lexington C.
