Notes from Newberry College, j v To the Ejhior of the Dispatch: Our base bill team played their first match game yesterday afternoon on our ground with the team of Erekine college. Oar men lined up as follow*: Crouch, pitcher; Cabaniee, catcher; Riy Hoover, first base; S M. Bd*by, second baef; Bocz9r, third \ base; J. T. Oven, shortstop; Scurry, right field. H B. WessiDger, center field; Bob Parke, left field. Thoee wbo knew cur team last win see that we fcave five new men and only four wbo were on our team last year. Thia being the first match game our new men hare played accounts for. our misfortune; but our new men played fine ball to be on their first match game. The result of the game is as follows: Newberry scored 0, Ersbine scored 4; Newberry made 7 bits, Erskioe made 8; Newberry made no errors, Erekine made two. They were introduced to a large number of the coeds and seemed to enjoy themselves among the fair sex. Oar cpliege quartette, Messrs. I E Long, J. M. Bedenbaugh, G. M Eie&zsr and F. 8. Long sang several nice pieces which were very mnch enjoyed by all. Mr. J. 31. Scbroeder and Coach Holland sang a few pieces. After this our co eds with Mrs. Scherer sang several co lege songs. Mr. V. B. Sease, who has been aw&y for some time on account of the mumps and measles, returned about a week ago. We are glad to see him back for we missed him very mnch while he was away. Our Young Men's Christian Association was well represented at the Inter-State convention held in Charleston March 23-26,1906. The following members represented onr association: Messrs. D. W. Moose, J. E. Gannon, J. Irby Koon, E. L Shealy, T. J. Hendrix and Bay Hoover. Dr. Jas. A. B. Scherer accompanied our boy 8 and preached in the Lutheran church on Sunday. Our young men are doing good work in the association this year. Mr. Editor, I notice in your paper that many citizens of Lexington county have not been getting the Dispatch because they have failed to pay up their dues. No one has any right whatever to blame you for not sending the paper when they will not pay for it, and no honest man will blame you. It is a very bad idea for those persons not to receive the county paper. Every true citizen ehonld patronize bis county paper. As a general rule our people do not take enough interest in newspapers, and the Lexington Dispatch fifty-two times a year is well worth one dollar to those who read it. The 58th annual meeting of the South Carolina Medical Association will convene in Columbia on April 18th and will continue for two and probably three days. The house of delegates, the executive body of the Association, will meet on the day preceding the opening of the session and will transact all matters of an executive nature to be disposed of before the opening of tbe meeting | proper. It is expected that the at *v * tendance will be large. The local members of the association are mekiDg preparations to entertian the doctors, and a committee on arrangement?, of which Dr. A. E-trle Boozer is chairman, has been appointed to t?ke charge of the feature. The other members of this committee are Drs. J. H. Mcintosh, L K. Poilpot, W M. Lester, A. B Kcowhon, J J. Watson and C. Fred Wilhftm3. The annual address will be made by Dr. Paul M. BirriDger of the University cf Virginia on the subject, "The Drugs That Eoslave." A special address will be made by P.-. W. Burdette, president of the Eufaula National bank, merchant and ' one of the most prominent and wealthy men of the Creek nation, was shot and killed at his home, April 4, in Eufaula, I T. His body was found near a well in the rear of his residence, a portion of his head being torn j away by a bullet wound. Tbere was no one at the place except Mr. Bur| dette and he had been dead many hours before the body was discovered. There is no clew to the assassin. Mr. Burdette carried life insurance policies aggregating 3250,000. Sis Father a Murderer. \ James W. Ince, a whirt farmer, who murdered his wife and three children near Whiteley, Ark., one year ago, was hanged today at Danville, Ark. It developed at the trial that Ioc6's mother was murdered by bis father 20 years ago. It was also shown that Ioce's sister had committed suicide. Rome, April 5 ?Mount Vesuvius is again in eruption. The situation is very serious. Five streams of lava are descending the mountain sides into the villages. All residents of the neighboring villages left their homes and took refuge out of reach of the lava. A dispatch from Naples Bays that showers of ashes from Vesuvius have fallen on that city. The eruption has become so active that the people have become greatly alarmed. The shower of ashes falling in this city is so thick that the pedestrians are carrying umbrellas. B Kyzer, was born December o-b, 1905, and departed this life March 27th, 190G, making her brief stay on earth three months and twenty-two days. After appropriate services the little body was laid to rest in the cemetery of St. John's Lutheran church, Lexington county, S. C. During her illness little Aurie was attended faithfully by food parent?, grand-parents aDd other relatives and friendf; but the Lord saw fit to remove her from this world of sorrow and suffering to the bright world on high where sorrow and suffering are no more, and where the weary aie at rest. May the dear Lord comfort the bereaved parents, they knowing "it is well with the child." Rev John B Lentz, a Mormon preacher, was killed by lightning while preaching in his pulpit in Carsod, Iowa, on Sunday. A young white man named B. A. Dennis was run over and killed by a trolley car in Columbia on Saturday. Alex Gilliam, colored, was sentenced at Chester on Friday to 10 years in the penitentiary for stealing a church communion service. A boy and a woman were run over and killed in New York city oa Sunday by an automobile and another woman was fatally hurt.
