The Chamber of Commerce, Colombia,
suggests a plan for the development
of the trucking and fruit
growing industries around that city,
which is a capital idea and one that
will not only prove of great benefit
to the business of Columbia, but is
near enough to our people, who are
so located as to receive benefit from
the movement, and should join in the
enterprise. Our people grow largely
vegetables and fruits of all kinds and
Columbia is their main market. The j
plan is to establish a large canning
factory in the city, and to get all of
the farmers in ibe territory aroacd

track and fruit. Tbc idea is a good
one.
"The people have already expressed
themselves on the dispensary
IV question in a number of counties, and
in the approaching campaign it
seems tbey will again have an opportunity
to send men to the legislature
who will enact such a law on the
subject as they demand. If the dispensary
question i? to be the main
issue before tbe Democratic voters
in South Carolina this jear let it
come, and 1st it be settled forever."?

It is of no little importance and
we trust all concerned will insist on
this plan.
By a vote of 202 to 26 the house of
representatives has passed the national
quarantine bill. The bill placeB

grounds and anchorages under the
secretary of the treasury and diiects
that as Boon as praticable after the
approval of the act be shall select and
design at such suitable places for
them and establish at such points on
or near the 6eacoast of the Mexican
border as in his judgment are best
suited for tbe same in order to prevent
the introduction of yellow fever
into tbe United States.
Tbe State says Columbia has made
tbe move toward securing the Seaboard
Air Line's general offices, &c.
From a geographical standpoint, it is
said, Colombia is the ideal place for
the location of these offices and shops,
inasmuch as it is near the centre of
the Seaboard's system. We would

be glad for the move to prove successful,
for what is good for Columbia
is good for Lexington. And when
we get the trolly, Columbia will surely
gain a feeder from our side, carrying
a better trade into ibe city than
any road going into tbat place.
Sural Schools.

in boases, furniture and grounds.
What, then, should be the character
of these public school houses where
the business of educating nine oat of

band themselves together for the
purpose of building better school
bouses, improving the old ones, decorating

The State Democratic Executive
Committee has called a Convention of
the Democratic party of South Carolina
to be held on May 16:h according
to the constitution.
You will please call a meeting of
your respective clubs Saturday April
28, as provided in the constitution
for the purpose of organizing for the
next two years, and elect delegates to
the County Convention to be held at
Lexington C H. on Monday May 7.
The representation in the County
Convention is one delegate for every
25 members and majority fraction
thereof according to club roll of 1904

trip to Lexington Thursday.
Rev. Inabinent delivered an ex
cellent sermon in the Methodist
church Sunday night.
Mr. Calvin Taylor and bride, of
near Steadm&D, spent Saturday Dight
and Sunday with Mr. Lewie Hallman
and family.
On account of the illness of Rev.
Wesaioger there was no service in
the Lut.ieran church Sunday everiDg.
Preaching has been appointed
there for Good Friday.
Mrs. T. S Sease spent Saturday
afternoon in Leesviile.
One of Mr. James Long's children
was real sick last week of la grippe,
but glad to say has greatly improved
now.
There seem9 to be plenty fruit yet.
Much corn has been planted and
the first planted is coming up to a
nice stand.
Mr. Crout, the sgent here, bad

noticed in the southern portion of
our county a few evenings since. Ooe
is reported to have swept the old Jas.
Taylor place houses and all, near Mr.
Reuben Baugbman'e on the Southern
extene oa. Further over on the
Seaboard other fires are reported.
