The Grand Jury Right.
The grand jury of Colleton county
did the right thicg ia the ngb* way
when they presented the county pension
board and the solicitor for rcl
proesing the case against four men
who were charged with fraud in con- ;
nection with Confederate pensions? |
the fraud consisting in perjury and j
forgery, and the testimony being j
clear and positive. Thepeusion board
bad requested the solicitor, W. St.
Julien Jeivey, to nol pros the cases
oq the payment by the defendants of !
the sums they had obtained by fraud, j
and be did so.
The do! pros was wrong; by it the |
guilty parties escaped all punishment,
even a finr; for they simply paid
back the money they had stolen. It
i9 giving two much encouragement
to thievery to let it be understood, or
imagined, that the only risk of stealing
is that 0De may have to give up
what he steals. Too many criminal

Leading Lady in "The Clansman"
Dead.
Columbia theatre-goers who witnessed
the Rev. Thomas Dixon's
"Toe Clansman" play and got so
much worked up over it, will regret
to learn of the death of the pretty
leading lady, Miss Georgia Welles,
who gave such an able interpretation
of the part of "Elsie," ihe daughter
of the Northern philanthropist, whom
the negro Lieutenant Governor Lynch
coveted, but who fell in love with the
leader cf the Ku Klux Ktan. She
died of appendicitis in a New York
hospital last Friday, hers being an
emergency case which had been
neglected too long fcr a successful
operation.
An Independent Farmer.
Mr. J. B Hook, of li F. D 3, one
of the best farmers on Red Bank, was
in town last Thursday, selling cotton
and left a spare dollar to help the
printers. He is O K, never buys
corn nor bacon, lives at home and
boards at the same place.

Saving Child She Met Death.
Thomasville. Ga., April 5.?Tonight
there occurred a terrible tragedy at

Mrs. Kiugsley was sitting quietly
ia her chair at home, with her little
infant playing about the room, when
the latter drew near a table cn which
stood a lighted kerosene lamp, and
puiled the tablecloth to the fljor, precipitating
the Aiming lamp with it,
and carrying the baby c ff its feet right
into the blaze. The loving mother,
frantic with fear, hurled the child
from danger, but succeeded in euving
it only at the price of her own life.
The lamp exploded and the blazing
oil enveloped her in a sheet of living
flame. Assistance was immediate,
but of no avail. The heroic woman
lingered in horrible agony for bours.
Mrs. Kingeley was a daughter of
I Sheriff Hight of Thomas county. ,

place of the wooden building, destroyed
by fire, will be handsome and
substantial buildings of cement
