Naples, April 9 ?Rsports of fatalities consequent upon the eruption of Mount Vesuvius are coming in. According to information received late tonight probably as many as 500 lives were lost in the district of San Guiseppe while from the ruins of a church which collapsed, owiDgr to the weight of ashes on the roof, 49 corpses were extricated And it is asserted that at Sorrento, 37 persons were killed by falling bouses. Cavalry * proceeding to the succor of the inhabitants of the devastated section have been ncable to make progress, the rain falling on the ashes a foot deep having made it impossible for the horses to travel. The sea is greatly agitated. The sky has cleared, but heavy clouds hang over the east, threatening a |p farther downpour. The streams of lava are almost stationary. Troops are erecting barriers in the direction of Pompeii to prevent farther danger in that quarter. This has been a day of terror for the cities, towns and country about Mount Vesuvius. Unconfirmed reports place the number of dead and injured at several hundred, but not many facts can be obtained upon which to base an accurate estimate. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Farmers are shipping green beans, cabbage and Irish potatoes to the Northern markets where they bring good prices. Other vegetables will soon follow. 'Some of my Lexington friends prophesied that my stay in Florida would be brief. Boys, don't think if you leave South Carolina you will starve or get eaten up by mosquetoes. We have organized a Sunday school < at St. Peter's (Piney Woods) with 85 students to start with. To the Editor of the Dispatch: No news from this correspondent for some time means that everything is moving on in a quiet and orderly manner. Mrs. L. W. Fuller, wife of Mr. Lawrence W. Fuller, died very suddenly last Tuesday night. Her sud| den death was a great shock to her family and friends. She leaves an aged mother, husband and two children. Washington, April 7 ?Moorefield Storey, of Boston, president of the Anti-imperialist league, appeared before the house committee on insular affairs this morning in favor of the McCall resolution directing the president to reach an agreement with the foreign nations of the world that they keep their hands off the Philippines, should they be given their independence. Mr. Storey declared i & w this was the most favorable time for pressing the nations to allow the Pailippines to remain undisturbed. The passage of the resolution did not mean that FtlipiD09 are to be given their independence today, tomorrow or next year, he said. Mr. Gilbert, (Democrat) of Kentucky, asked if it was not true that disorder in the islande was prompted to a great extent by the belief that the United States would never give the Filipinos independence. Slot Machines Out of Business. Columbia Record of the 9tb, says: The police department yesterday confiscated 41 of the slot machines which have been used lately dispensing cigars and chewing gum. This action was taken by Detective Broom and Donning upon a warrant Bworn out by Recorder Stanley. The war rant alleges violation of the State law. This puts the case in a new aspect entirely. Heretofore in trying to stop the slot machines the police have been operating under the municipal laws against violation of the Sabbath, and now they are working under a State law in making the confiscations. Answer to Georgia Letter. To the Editor of the Dispatch: Answers to tbe questions asked by Mr. Oupstid in the "Letter from Georgia" as to Moses: Moses died in tbe laod of Moab and God buried him. Refreshments consisting of ice-cream and cake were served. Altogether it was a very pleasant f.ffiir, and the proceeds amounted to $37. Kail Agent on Angnsta Train. It is dow practically certain that the efforts that have recently been made by Senator Tillman and Representative Lever to have the postcfSce department place a mail agent on the train leaving Columbia for Augusta late in the afternoon will be successful. Discussing this matter, Mr. Lever said todaj: 'T have just been to see General White, superintendent of the railway mail division cf the postoffice department, about putting on a mail agent on the train that leaves Columbia about 5 o'clock in the efternoon for Augusta. I have been at work on this matter for eome time and I believe we will be successful. Frequently the train from the North that reaches Columbia about noon is late, and by the time it gets to Columbia the one for Augusta has gone. That delays all mail from the North to points between Columbia and Augusta until about daylight next morning?a delay of about seventeen hours. The placing of a mail agent on the afternoon train out of Columbia for Augueta will be cf . incalculable value to the stations along the line. A through pouch is already carried on this train from Columbia to Augusta, but no mail is 1 delivered along the route.
