"It is up to the people now," says Senator Tillman concerning the dispensary situation, "and there will be a hot time next summer," he declares. The senator, who has been ill for the past Sfveral da} 8, got out of bed this morning contrary to advice and . went to the capitol. He seemed to *3* be loaded up, not on the product of tbe dispensary aud the distilleries, but on tbe subject of both, for be actually got up in tbe senate during the pure food discussion and gave a lecture on good whiskey end bad whiskey, how to moke it and how to secure its blessing to ourselves and our children. But it was in Lis office that he talked very freeiy aud wuh his usual fire and vim upon the South Carolina situation. "Thecampaiguwill.be three cornered," says he. "There will be three distinct elements?at least I propose to make it that way if I can and I think it will have to be that way. | There will be the advocates of the Stake dispensary and these, of courts, want the Brice law repealed. There will be those who want local option of either county dispensary or prohibition. Then there will be those who want a third optioD, either dispensary, prohibition or high license.'' ''And where do you stand?" "I stand," be answered severely, "just where I have always stood, squarely for the dispensary, but if any county does not want a dispensary, if the majority of people vote against haviDg one, I am not in favor of forcing one on tbem and never have been only this, I or anybody else who believes in having things done honestly and squarely don't want any euch law as the Brice law, which disfranchises one third of the people." The senator wa3 asked how the issue would be so narrowly defined. "Why every man who offers himself for the legislature ought to be forced, and he will be forced, to come out eqaarely and declare himself one | way or another and, mind you, when de does declare himself I waDt him * to stick to it like a man and like an honest man. If he is a prohibitionist and wants to down the dispensary, let him stand np far his convictions and not ba entering into dirty bargains with high license men; and vice versa if he is high license man. I respect a high license man if be is honest and open and above board, bat let him stick oat for high license and not be dickering with prohibitionists. I want some straightforward, honest, open aDd above board politics in South Carolina and I want ; the people to decide this matter themselves."?The State.
