Gen. Joe Wheeler Dead.
New York, Jan. 25?Gen. Joseph j
Wheeler, the famous Confederate
cavalry leader and a brigadier general
of the United States army since the
war with Spain, died at 5 35 o'clock
this afternoon at the home of his j
sister, Mrs. Sterling Smith, in Brook- j
lyn. The veteran of two wars was i
69 years old, but in spite of his age^
there was hope until yesterday of !
his recovery from the attack of pceu- j
mania, which caused his death.
It has not yet been announced j
where the body will be buried, but !

Gen. Wheeler was taken ill six
days ago at his bistei's home, where j
he has been living recently. He contracted
a severe cold which develop- j

lungs.
Gen. Wheeler's immediate relatives
were all with him. His daughters,
Mr . W. J. Harris and the Misses

and arrived early in the week His
sod, Maj. Jos. Wheeler, Jr. U S. A.,
now stationed at West Hoint. was
also present, as well as Gen. Wheeler's
sister, Mrs. Sterling Smith, and b6r
son.

May Cause Mistrial.
Savannah, Ga. Jan. 56?Neaily
three weeks have been consumed in
the trial of the Greene and Gaynor
case, and now all ths work and expense
involved threatens to go for
naught, because of the illness of one i
of the jurors. This morning the
session had to be cut short because
of the indisposition, and it remains
for tomorrow to show whether he
will have sufficiently recovered to
admit of the trial proceeding.

Telephone company, was shot to
death while at work on the top of a
telephone post in Savannah, Ga., on
Friday, the murderer using a shotgun.

Rountree, a former employe of the
company, whose job was given to
Floyd.

Winn, aged 38, shot and killed hie
wife, aged 30, and sitter-in- law, Mrs.
Clara E. Rigges, of Portland, Maine,
aged 26, last n<ght and then killed
himself. The tripple tragedy was
not discovered uoril this morning,
when all three were found dead in
one room.
Primitive Water Pipes.
Very primitive water pipes of an ancient
date have been discovered in the
streets of Manchester. England. They
were hollowed out tree trunks fitted
together so as to make a wooden c-on
duit. The joints were somewhat in I
the style of those of a fishing rod. the
thin end of one trunk being made to
fit into the thick end of the other. It
is supposed that this means of supplying
Manchester with water was in
use about 200 years ago, and discoveries
of the same kind made in other
towns go to confirm that view. The
boring through the wood was about
four inches in diameter. The supply
of water in those days was not only
much less in absolute quantity than
now, but very much less in proportion
to the population.
Higrhholes' Large Families.
Few birds have larger families than
the highhole, but, were it not for the
number of his family, how could he
hold his own among so many enemies?
His conspicuous size and color always
make him a shining mark to the collector,
for every village lad in the land
has collected flickers' eggs. He is a
fellow of expediency, however. If his
home is robbed, his wife soon lays another

one pair, when tested by the removal
of egg after egg, laid seventy-one eggs
