THE LEXIHfiTOH DISPATCH. Wednesday, January 31, 1906. Stock Food Swindle. The Raleigh Progressive Farmer ! Bounds a note of warning to the farmers of the South about what it calls the stock food swindle. It says that one of the most outrageous frauds ' now being perpetrated upon the American farmer is that of prepared etockfoodg?eommon meal, bran, etc., with a little cheap sulphur, salt, Ep-som salts, pepper, saltpeter, etc.; aded to change the taste, aud the mixture (hardly more valuable than ordinary ship stuff) put ia Aiming packages, advertised in big illustrated ads ia farm papers, aud sold to gullible farmers at from $250 to $2,500 a toe." The Progressive Farxner says further, that some time ago, the chief Southern contributor of one of the farm papers most largely cir% eulated in North Carolina and adjoining States, wrote an exposure of the whole miserable fraud and sent it to his paper. "The reply came back: The Blank Stock Food Com pany pays as $3,000 a year for ad artising and we would lose ifc if we were to print yoar letter. Please don't insist" It is qaite proper that while the patent medicine nostrums are getting a drubbing, the stock food humbugs sboull be exposed, and this The Progressive Farmer proposes to do. If the frauds are of the nature complained of, we hope the exposure will be of a nature as ( to protect the farmers against them. , ?Charlotte Chronicle. , - 1 Deafness Cannot be Cured. The State Bureau, 1417 G Street, N. W, Washington, Jan. 21. Representative Lever has filed with Superintendent wbi?e of the railway mail service a petition numerously signed by prominent citizens along the line of the Columbia, Charlotte and Augusta road asking that mail services be put on trains Nos. 7. and 130?the trains operating between Columbia and Augusta. Mr. Lever said chat if he could succeed in inducing the department to grant this service it would b8 of groat value to the people between Augusta and Columbia. 'Tfc frequently happens,"he said, ''that train No. 33 from the North is late, and in that event the mid-day train from Columbia to Augusta leaves without the Northern mail, which cause*! this mail to reach local points between Columbia ard Augusta about 17 hours late. If we can get this service, this Northern mail and also the mail coming on trains from the northern part cf the State would be taken up by the train leaving Columbia at 5 p. m. for Augusta. This would give a very convenient service and wouM remedy the inconvenience now very much j complained of by the points interested between Columbia and Augusta " Talking further h9 said: "I shall give this matter my best efforts. *T think we are in fairly good shape to get the service on the through freight from Laurens to Co- s lumbia. We have Bucceded in re- | moving one of the main objections and I am now awaitiDg a report from Superintendent Terrell, who is in charge of the local division at I Augusta.
