A. dispatch from New York says:
Geo. Joseph Wheeler, the famous
cavalry leader, has been announced
as a candidate for William McAdoo's
place as police commissioner. His
friends think it settled that Mayor
i McClellan will name him for the
; position.
That General Wheeler is a possibility
for ruler of the city's police
I caused much sumrise when the news
a
came out. He has been the darkest
Bort of a dark horse candidate.
Around the city hall the rumor of bis
candidacy was circulated as authentic,
and almost everyone believed it.
This is one of the many appointment*
about which Mayor McClellan
has not consulted Boss Murphy.
General Wheeler is the Mayor's own
choice, it is declared.
General Wheeler has been living
in New York moot of the time since
the Spanish-American war. He draws
half pay as a major general of the
Uoited StateB army, and if be becomes
police commissioner he will
still enjoy this allowance.
Neither the appointment of General
Wheeler nor of any of the other men
whom the mayor has chosen will be
announced until January 1.
When the civil war opeDed General
Wheeler cast his lot with the South,

He saw aotive service before Santiago.
and.it was upon bis insistence
that General Shatter, in command,
instead of falling back and sending
for reinforcements, sent a demand
for the city to surrender. The city
surrendered. General Wheeler is
small in statue, but big in courage
and energy. S nee the above was in
type Mayor McC ellan has appointed
Brig. Gen. Theodore A. Bingham, U.

Sickening Skivering Fits
of Ague and Malaria, can be relieved and
cured with Electric Bitters. This is a
pure, tonic medicine; of espeeial benefit
in malaria, for it exerts a true curative
influence on the disease, driving it entirely
out of the system. It is much to
be preferred to Quinine, having none of
this drug's bad after-effects. E. S. Manday,
of Henrietta, Tex., writes; "My

Dangers of a Cold and Sow to
Avoid Them.
More fatalities have their origin in or
result from a cold than from any other
cause. This fact alone should make people
more careful as there is no danger
whatever from a cold when it is properly
treated in the beginning. For many
years Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has
been recognized as the most prompt and
effectual medicine in use for this disease. ,
It acts on nature's plan, loosens the
cough, relieves the lungs, opens the
secretions and aids nature in restoring
the svstem to a healthv condition. Sold
