Try-County Pair.
TheTri-Coaoty Fair, held at Batesbnrg
on the 13th and 14th instant,
far exceeded the expectations of the
most sanguine. For this success too
mooh praise cannot be given to our
friend Col. John Bell Towill, the
never tiring and ever energetic president
of the fair association, and the

possible.
The fact that 5,000 people visited
the initial fair, some of whom came
through rain, is a clear indication
that the Tri-County Fair Association
has come into existence to stay; and
the Dispatch wishes it all the sucoess
it deserves and takes an honest pride
in all that it may accomplish
The entire time of the visitors was
well occupied. Besides the horse
show, the floral display, the exhibition
of magnificent specimens of
poultry and live stock, the visitors
were treated to inspiring strains of
music well rendered by a band secured
for their entertainment. Another
interesting feature of the fair, and a
free one, was the morning and afternoon
public performance of tbe bigb
diver, who jumped off an elevation of
* ninty-two feet backward*, cutting
summersaults into a pool of water.
So it went, one pleasant feature after
another, ail tending to complete a
glorious whole.
Space will no! permit us to give
a list of the premiums and by whom
\ won, but the fact is that Lexington
county secured a considerable number
of them. That is right Lexington,
keep it up! We like to see and
hear of your success.
The "crowning" event of the whole
fair was the crowning of the queen
?of the three counties?Aiken, Sainda
and Lexington?who had been selected
by popular votes Her magesty,
who is the queen of hearts* and as
such is to reign in the realm above
indicated, with fair hopes, we dare
say, of bringing still others under
her sceptere, is Miss Minnie Bates,
the eldest daughter of Mr. N. A.
Bates, of Batesburg, a prosperous
planter of that section. This ceremony
occurred in the opera bouse,
which, dispite the inclement weather,
was crowded to its utmost capacity.
The coronation took place promptly
at 9 o'clock. Lieutenant Governor
John T. Sloan in a few well chosen
words placed the crown upon the fair
brow of her majesty and in doing so
acknowledged himself an humble subject
The queen's attendance, con.
sisted of four lad*e3-in-waiting. Misses
Ola Thompson, Kate Collum, Locile
Efird and Eva Macs; four jcourtiers
Messrs. W. A. CooDer, Sam P. Roof,
* E. L. Hartley and Geo. Bell Tim merman;
and four little flower girls,
Misses Freda Rutland, Lois Keroaghan,
Elvira Wbitten and Rose Crosson.
Immediately after the coronation
Mayor M. B. Edwards presented*
to the court and the sudience Major
W. W. Lumpkin, of Columbia, who
spoke on the subject woman, and

wit and eloquence.
At tbis juncture resolutions were
offered commending President J. B.
Towill and the officers of tbe association
for their faithfal work in making
the initial Tri-Couoty Fair a success,
which were unanimously adopted.
Immediately succeeding this came
repeated and persistent calls for a
speech from Col- Towill, to which he
feelingly responded. After the adjournment
the queen and her attendants
held an informal reception.
Taken all together the Tri-Oounty
Fair proved a magnificent success in
which the Dispatch takes an exultant
pride.

bring yon oceans of mirth and happiness.

The progressive town of Pomaria,
Jfewberry connty, was swept by a
disastrous fire last week. Six stores
ont of seven now lay in ashes as the
Jesuit.
The Comptroller General has reported
that there are 2,751 dogs in
Lexington county on which there is a
' tax of fifty cents each for the school
fund.
Senator Foraker, of Ohio, has introduced
a bill to pr vide for the ap
