A Deplorable Affair.
Early Friday morning, in Gaffoey,
S. C, George Hasfcv, a hotel pro- !
prietor, shot Milan Bennett and Ab- |
bot Davidson, one a musical director j
and the other an actor with the
"Nothing But Money" company. ]
Bennett died instantly and Davidson j
lingered until Saturday afternoon
when he died.
It was a deplorable and unfortunate
8ffair and greatly regretted in j
Gaffney. It seems that two actresses
with the company, Misses Bishop
and Sheridan, reported to Bennett j
and Davidson that Hasty, the pro- (
prietor of the hotel at, which they
were stopping, bad made improper |
advances to them the night and afternoon
before. Upon hearing of the j

the matter. He denied the statement
of the women. Hot words ensued,
and finally a difficulty was precipitated
in which both of the sbcw men j
were shot by Hasty, resulting in '
their death. The testimony of the j
two sides is somewhat conflicting as 1
to details. Hasty was immediately
arrested and is now in jail awaiting
trial.
Davidson was a member of both j
the Masonic and Knights of Pythias !
order?, and the local lodges gave
him all the care and attention possi- '
ble under the circumstances. It I
was reported that the women with j
the show were engaged to the men ;
who were killed. Hasty denies that

The bcdies of the dead were sent !
to their respective homes for burial
escorted by Brother Masons aDd

disbanded and some of the members
have returned home.

That county was placed in tne Eighth
Circuit.
It will be seen from the above that
Edgefield county led in point of convictions
with 80 per cent, with Lexington
county close second; and that
Kershaw came last in point of convictions,
with 68 percent , with Richland
a close second, Saluda occupied
the middle ground. This is a good
showing for Lexington and her law
abiding citizens.
