Nine out of ten men in the South would vote for him today, if the race question could be sidetracked," said ex-Senator John L. "The President's Southern trip did the Republican party a world of good," said Mr. McLauriD, "and added thousands to the President's personal friends. Pittison, as Governor of Ohio by approximately 40,000 plurality over Myron T. Herrick, the present Republican Governor; an immediate appeal by William R. Hearst, the Municipal Ownership candidate for the New York mayoralty to the supreme court to contest McClellan's re-election in that city on the b?6io of alleged evidence of wholesale illegal acts at the polls, a plurality of 3,485 votes for McClel| Ian; an immediate contest by the Fusionists in Louisville in the courts against the election of Democratic municipal officers and members of the Legislature, were the developI ments in today's election aftermath. McClellan's plurality is the minimum on record for a eucc^sful mayI orality candidate in New York. Mr. Hearst's managers claim evidence of illegal acts against 1,000 inspectors of election and that 30.000 of bis ad| herents were turned back from the polls because their names had already I been voted. District Attorney Jerome has announced be will immediately make a searching investigation of the alleged wholesale frauds and has ordered the returns from the eighteen and sixth assembly districts to be carefully guarded. These are the home districts of Tammany's leaders Murphy and "Tim" Sullivan. All through Ohio the belated returns showed Republican losses and Republicans concede Pittison's plurality reaches 25,000. The Democrats claim Pittison's plurality ap; proximates 5F,000, which would i elect the entire Democratic ticket. The Legislature is Democratic. The city party's (Reform) plurality in Philadelphia is 43,333 for Sheriff. The upheaval was the greatest in Pennsylvania for many years. The Maryland Legislature is Democratic aod Atkinson, Democrat, for Corapfcrollor is elected. la Rh( *e Island, the Republican gubernatorial candidate has a plurality of 4,342. In Massachusetts, the Democrats threaten a recount of the vote for Lieutenant Governor. Draper, the Republican candidate, having received less than 2,000 plurality. Every candidate of the Un oa Labor party in San Faancisco was elected by substantial majorities; in Salt Lake the anti-Morman victory is made complete by the election of the entire American party city ticket. In Kentucky, the Legislature which will elect a successor to Senator Blackburn, is heavily Democratic. The Democrats elected a mayor in Louisville by about 2,500. Nebraska was swept by the Republicans. Returns from other States and cities show no notable changes. So Case of Faeaaioaia oa Record. Washington, November 8.?The validity of the Miseonri eight hour law for miners was today affirmed by the Supreme Court in case of H. J. Cantwell and other officers of the Catherine lead mines in that State. They were arrested and convicted of violating the law by compelling or permitting their miners to work over the regulation eight hours. They appealed to the Supreme Court of Missouri. Their contention was that the law was invalid, being in contravention of the provision of the State constitution prohibiting the enact, ment of special laws regulating labor and of federal guarantee of the right of contract. Upon the affimance of the latter court Cantwell brought the case to the Federal Supreme court which today affimed the lower decrees on the authority of previous decisions. Messrs. J. P.
