Last week government engineers, in company with Congressman Lever and some representatives of the business interests of' Columbia, made a trip on the Ccngaree river with a view of ascertaining the practicability of deepening the channel so as to assure its navigation at any stage of the river. We have not seen the findings of the engineers, but it is safe to say, without an attempt to forestall that report, that it wHl be * - ? *- , _ i il _ j iavoraoie, oeuauae mo uoopouiu^ ut this stream is both feasible and practicable. There is some talk of patting another boat on the river, but of oonrse it depends largely upon what action the government will take in the matter before final action is taken. ; The first snow and sleet covered the groand in Iowa, Nebraska, and northern Missouri on Monday and Tuesday. What Do Fish Do, and the Seals and Insects and Worms? Here is a problem for people' with sharp eyes: As we all know, a horse when walking or trotting advances on!?- one leg of each pair at a time, but when galloping lifts both fore feet together and then both hind feet. Now, the question is how other animals manage this matter. The birds, of course, flap both witigs* together, but which birds run and which hop? We human beings "trot" when we walk and "gallop" when we swim?that is, if we are using the plain breast stroke. The dog, however, "trots" for both Now, do the amphibious animals?the seals, otters and the rest?swim like men or like'other four footed creatures? Then there are the fish. One would rather expect that, as they move their tails from side to side, they would flap alternately with the fins, which are their hands and feet. I doubt if many people can tell on which system the caterpillar manages its dozen or so legs or whether the adult insect walks, trots, paces or gallops on its six. How does the spider use eight? Altogether this is a large field for observation, a .field, too, where any one may discover new facts as yet unrecorded, and thus add to the store of knowledge?St. Nicholas. Standard Weights Fised. There is not a little discussion in some counties as to the correctness of weights and measures. The issoe seems to have been joined at first by two rival concerns which sell computing scales. Gov. Heyward has received perhaps a dozen letters from clerks of court in reference to the standard measures which should be in the court houses in compliance with an act passed in 1842 The acts of this State declare that weights and measures mu3t be regulated by a standard fixed by the Congress of the United States, tnat the weights furnished by the federal ? i . ?_ government must ne Kept dy tee State Treasurer and by such shall all weights in the State be regulated. Section 1624 6ay&: "The clerk of court in each county shall furnish and is required to keep in his office the weights and measures established by law which shall be the standard of all other weights aDd measures in the county aDd to which any person shall have access to test the same. The Governor of the State is authorized and required to purchase 6ucb standard weights and measures out cf the fines and forfeitures incurred in their respective ccuaties." Odessa, Nov. 3 ?An inferno raged in this eity during the night and continued throueh the early hours of the morning. No other word would probably describe the awful scenes enacted here during the last fifteen hours. Conditions beggar description. Drunken mobs have run riot through the streets, behaving like packs of wild beasts toward the Jews Although martial law was declared yesterday and theoretically c.minues in effect, the troops during night and early today did nothing to prevent the sacking of the Jewish quarters j aud work of pillage /begun Wednesday evening has continued unchecked. This riot of bloodshed and robbery has continued now for over forty-eight hours. Troops have contented themselves with preventing mobs from pillaging homes and shops of Christians, none of which have yet been harmed. Hospitals cannot accomodate all the wounded, many houses' being turned into temporary infirmaries. It is estimated that 5,000 persons were killed or wounded during the rioting. Wheeler, the proprietor of the Columbia hotel, was arrested last night and summoned to appear before the recorder this morning on the charge cf running a gaming house. The arrest was the result of the raid made fair week in which twenty-three persons charged with gambling were arrested on the third floor of the hotel. This action was taken by the police commission and this morning Mr. Wheeler appeared in court and aBked for a continuance until tomorrow morning, which was granted. The continuance was aeked for because Mr. Wheeler's attorneys, Messrs. Bellinger and Welsh, were engaged in the pickpocket case. The warrant for the arrest was sworn out by Special Officer James Dunning.
