Tins statement was denied at the time it was made by the Supervisor bat the recent resnlt of the special investigating committee, which has been investigating the fiscal condi-, . tion of the Supervisor's office of that county, fully sustains the contention of the Dispatch in reference to this matter. Is fact we cannot understand why a few of our people are discontented with their present iDvironment when Lexington county is free of debt-, its tax levy is reasonably low and it is one of the richest and most prosperous counties in the State. If our people woold only get together and work and puli together for the mate rial progress and prosperity of Lexington we would have no room nor time for malcontents, and there would no longer be beard propositions to dismember Lexington county to form new counties, for every one would be - satisfied with the result of that effort There was an opening in formal style of a consolidated rural school at the grave cf General Thomas Snmter, in Sumter county, yesterday. The academy which is the outgrowth of the consolidation, is to be known as the "Gen. Snmter Memorial Academy." As Gen. Sumter's grave has no marble shaft, nor.no other mark to show his last resting place, this academy is intended as a memorial to his hallowed memory. The Southern Railway is offering excursion rates to Columbia on account of the State Fair, at the rate of one first class fare, plus 25 cents, plus 50 cents for the round trip.; That is to say the fare from this place will be $112 for the ronnd trip, a saviog of 12 cents only from the regular fare, including admission ticket into the fair grouod. With the continued orosneritv L 1 that is now blessing this State there is every indication that the State Fair for 1905 will be more largely attended than ever before in its history. Last year the South Carolina State Agricultural and Mechanical Society celebrated its annual Fair at its new home in the southern suburb of Columbia. As is usually the case, there were some little details that could not be finished for the holding of the last Fair, but President Guignard has had a full year in which to have all of these rough spots smoothed out, and the outlook is that never before in its history will the State Fair- have a more succeesful Fair than that which is to be held here on October 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, inclusive. | The inquiry for space at the 1 grounds, as well as from small exhibitors, indicate a very general ap- : preciation of the value of such ex- ' hibits. The railroad rates are always cheaper for the State Fair than at any other time, and more people come to Columbia during^ Fair Week than during any other of the * fifty-two weeks of the year. In fact, pretty much everybody who is anybody in South Carolina is here during Fair Week. Relatives, friends and acquaintances from all parts of the State gather in Columbia to talk about the joys and sorrows of the year, ard to join in the festivities. It is the one week that is given up aimost entirely by the people of the State towards having a good time, and the family gatherings and reunions - that have already been planned for the coming Fair Week all go to show that this custom at each succeeding State Fair is being more emphasized than ever. One of the particular attractions for a great many folks will be the fact that the 650 cadets of Clemson College will be encamped here during the entire Fair Week. They will give dress parades and drills each day while here, and will have ample time in which to mingle with their friends. A great many people in this State now are taking a keen interest in football. Two of the best games of the year are played here during each Fair Week. In one of these games the team of the South Carolina College participates, and in the other Clemson College engages. Both of these teams are strong and manly, and two exciting games are to be expected. The southern territory is devel oping a very strong horseracmg field. More and better horses are brought here to participate in the races. The finest racetrack in this territory is at the State Fair << Grounds, and it has been established at a considerable expense. Every comfort for the patrons as tvell as for the fine racers has been provided. , i The city of Columbia, in addition :o extending a cordial welcome to :he visitors, has arranged for free street attractions. Even if there >vere no free street attractions, the people of South Carolina ought not o miss the chance of meeting their friends from all parts of the State n Columbia on October 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, inclusive.
