New Orleans, Oct. 6 ?The dam at Grand Cnenier,' closing the Mermen- j teau river in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, was blown up last night with dynamite, exploded by electricity. The outrage was undoubtedly perpetrated by farmers and stock raisers of the neighborhood who complained that the dam flooded their lands. | Ever since its construction, about a year ago, it has aroused bitterness in the neighborhood. The dam was constructed under an act of Congress, the Mermenteau being a navigable stream, for the purpose of furnishing the rice growers of the neighborhood with a supply of water for their crop. The Frohifcs Meet. Columbia Record, October 6th. It is evident that the prohibitionists are seriously thinking of putting out a State ticket despite the opposition to this movement cn the part of some of the members of the organization who do not think that is the best way to win. Two meeticgs have been held in Columbia this week and at both of them members of the State organization formed here several months ago, were present and discussed the outlook for a State ticket. Among those here were John L. McLaurin, Jos. A McCullougb, C C. Featberstoce, L J. Bristow and others. A young man named McDowell has been arrested by the Uoited States authorities on the charge of sending an obscene postal card throngh the mails to a yonng lady in Spartanburg. John M. Ashley, J. R Moore, Josh Moore, Will Moore and Hugh Bowod, charged with the murder of the negro Allen Pendleton at Honea Path, have been booDd over to court in the sum of $7,000 each. An old negro from the country was robbed of $106 cotton money in Columbia by two young colored sharps on Friday. Engineer George Manning, of the C. & W. 0. road, was shot in the back on Thursday in Spartanburg while bringing his train into the city. A youDg negro man living near the track did the shootiDg with a pistol, no reason being assigned except meanness. A fire at Horishima, Japan, on Sunday, destroyed twenty buildings containing army provisions and clothing?the total loss amounting to more than two million dollars. Five children of Frederick Adamson, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, perished in a fire that destroyed his home on Thursday night, the fire having started from the explosion of a gasoline stove. 1905.
