The Lexington Dispatch.
Wednesday, October 4, 1905,
Newberry Letter.
The dispensaries in Newberry
county are a thing of the past. We
will say for tbe information of one of
our Lexington friends whom we met
at the Hilton barbecue, that seventynine
petitioned to the County Board
of Control, thirty-five of whom were
negroes. This is the way in which
the dispensary was established in
Newberry. We will say to all those
who are interested in the whiskey
? T , .u.i
(.jUWBtlUU 1U JLiCAJUgtUU Kj'JUU'jy tUttb
their registration certificate and tax
receipt are required before they can
vote. Should the dispensary be voted
out the people will not have the
oppoxtuuiiy to vote for lie dispensary
again under four jeers. We
are all human beings and we all have
our weaknesses and short comings.
Roosevelt, the highest power in the
United States, invited Booker Washington
to dine with him; This certainly
was weakness on the part of
somebody. So it is with this great
whiskey question in Sjuth Carolina.
Some people think it is wrong for
the State to eDgsge in the whiskey
* business. Seme e-ay it is right for
the State to handle it. So there is
weakness on the pfit of somebody or
this question couid be solved. Oar
bumble opinion is if the State would
pay me "dispenser wno soia me smallest
amount of whiskey the most
money ifc would not be long before
whiskey drinkiog would be down to
zero.
One word to the boys and we will
close our letter: Boys, honor thy
father, you love your - mother and
you take occasion to show your love
for her in ways that she well understands.
But your father, my boys,
you love him, too, in a different sort
of way. But do you boDor him, and
do you show that you do? Deep
down, of course, you honor your
father, but Dot until you have a boy
of your own will you know how much
you hurt your father's heart when
you flaunt his advise or show by
your manner that you think trie "old
man" is a kind of a "back number."
Just as certain as you live there will
come a day when you will remember
your unfaithful attitude toward your
father and be sorry for it, and ^ben
it may be too late. The keenest
remorse you will ever know will be
the memory of your ill treatment or
lack of respect for your father.
When the thoughts of present
* %?
days snail come to yon yon win remember
that you often showed your
mother the affection that yon felt for
her, and denied it to yonr father,
whom you also loved. Remember,
my boys, that father's ways are not
your mother'* ways. Father has
had to fight the world for yonr bread
and the world has taught bim to
conceal his feelings. He loves you
just as much as your mother does
only he cannot show it. When you
do anything to be proud of nobody
on earth is prouder than your father.
Of course, you may think your father
is not np to date in every respect. All
this may be true, but the chances
are father knows more about almost
everything than you do. When you
are, say 30 years old, you may realize
this fact. If you Jive a long
time in this world, boys, you may
always be led to say that the safest
adviser you ever bad was your father.
Honor the man who looks like you.
Best wishes to you, Mr. Editor,
and your many readers. B. B. H.

Tribute of Respeet.
Brother Chancellor Commander and
Brothers:
Amid the cares and responsibilities,
trinmps and disappointments and
the changing scenes of life, we pause
awhile, tonight, to pay a slight but
appropriate tribute of respect and
love to one who by his upright life
and brotherly demeanor bad endeard
himself to us all As the years pass
like summer clouds, erne after another
of those whom we have known and
esteemed, in this lodge, enter the dark
"Valley of the Sh* dow of Death" and
depart to that undiscovered country
from whose bourne no traveler returns.
We, as a Lodge of "Knights of
Pythias," are called to mourn the
c-e ith of our beloved brother W. A.
Moody, who died August 28th, 1905,
than whom no truer Knight or more
loyal friend ever lived.
Therefore be it resolved:
1 That in the death of brother
W. A Moody, Broobland Lodge, No.
76, K of P , has lost a true brother,
a loyal friend to his church, a staunch
member; bis wife a devoted huebrand.
2. That the sympathy of this lodge
is hereby tendered the devoted wife
of our departed brother.
3 That a page in our minute book
be suitably inscribed to his memory
and that a copy of these resolutions
be Rent to the wife of our brother
and that the usual emblems of
mouning be displayed for the period
of thirty days.

Not a shadow on his brest,

And the weary are at rest."

Why Ho Lost Out.
A young man not a thousand miles
from here went with his sister to a
dry goods store. He purchased a
pair of gloves for bis sweetheart.
The sister bought a pair of hose for
herself. . Of course, the clerk got
them mixed. The explosion came
when the sweetheart opened the
package and found a pair of long,
black stockings. She blushed. Then
she opened the note and read the
following tender lines: '*1 am sending
you a little present. On, bow I
wish that no other hands than mioe
would ever be permited to touch
them after you put them on. But,
alas, a score of fellows may touch
them, when I am not by your side
and other eyes may see them when
you are on the street or at parties.
I bought the longest pair I could
get, and if they are too long you may
let them wrinkle down. A great
many girls I know wear them slipped
down a little. Always wear them at
parties. I want to see bow tbey fit
when I call Tuesday sight. You oas
cleas them easily, dear, witb benzine,
if you keep them oo till tbey dry. I
hope tbey are sot too small. Blow
in tbem before you put them on."
The young man did. call Tuesday
night "to see bow tb6y fitted," but it
is understood that be failed to win a
home.?Ex:
Fall of Tragic Meaning
axe these lines from J. H. Simmons, of

No Benevolent Assimilation.
Secretary Taft, who has returned
from bis Asiatic trip, does not gire a
very cbeenng account ot conditio! s
in the Philippines. The people are
still far from being "benevolently assimilated,"
for the agitation for independence
seems to be more insistent
than ever. The Secretary made t
plain, however, that this must not be
expected for a generation yet. There
is hardly a doubt that the sentiment
of the people of the country is
against longer holding the ishndp,
which are not only of no profit
to us but which cost us great sums
each jear. Perhaps it is benevtlinceon
our part to oversee, rule
and train them for independence, but
it is a very costly job and there is little
assurance that within several generafinnq
fKfl T?i Ii rvinno will ho or?t7 haffcp
prepare d for independence than they
now are.
Wounds, Bruises and Burns.
By applying an antiseptic dressing to
wounds, bruises, burns and like injuries
before inflammation sets in, they may
be healed without maturation and in
about one-third the time required by
the old treatment. This is the greatest
discovery and triumph of modern surgery.
Chamberlain's Pain Balm acts
on this same principle. It is an antiseptic
and when applied to such in juries,
causes them to heal very quickly. It
also allays the pain and soreness and
prevents any danger of blood poisoning.
Keep a bottle of Pain Balm in your
home and it will save you time and
money, not to mention the inconvenience
and suffering sucli injuries entail.
