The far-sighted engineer of the through train approaching discovered what he thought was a huge boulder in the way and halted the train at a distance cf several hundred yards. The obstacle proved to be an ear of corn which, according to Mr. Painter, required twenty men to remove it. Life. Life is a strange combination. The strained relations between Germany and France over the Morocco situation have thrown under the limelight once more the picturesque figure of Mulai Abdul Aziz, sultan of Morocco, whose rule of his domain provides none too great safety for the persons and property of foreigners. Many abuses exist in the sultan's realm, and commercial intercourse with European nations is attended by difficulties on this account. E^it the potion of the French government in seeding to establish a predominance of French influence in that part of Africa aroused the jealousy of Germany, led to war talk between the two countries and finally resulted in a call for an international conference to consider the 'status of Morocco and the subject of internal reforms in the interest of commerce. Abdul Aziz has now been ruler of Morocco for eleven years and is twenty-six years of age. He is considered a progressive monarch as monarchs go in Africa?to put it mildlj-, is eccentrie.
