R Tiilmao, in response to a numerously signed invitation to address tbe peoyle of Lexington on the whiskey question, came over from Columbia by private conveyance and made a timely address to a large member of tbe qualified voters of this county in tbe court bouse last Saturday morning, in defense of tbe dispensary system of curtailing the use of alcoholic liquors as a beverage by controlling its sale. The court bouse was comfortably filled.' Almost every available seat being occupied bf men who do the voting with Here and there a sprinkling of the gentler sex, and almost every section of the county being represented. Mr. Tillman although much fatigued by his travel and public speaking elsewhere m the State, spoke on the subject of dispensary or no disyeosary for about one hour and a half, and was givea a close and attentive hearing from the beginning to the close of his address and was frequently interrupted by applause. * Among the quaint and striking illustrations we mention the folio wing: He said to the farmers that, if the bogs should get into the ; potatoe patch would they destroy the patch or drive the hogs out? As much as to say that the dispensary system was all right, but the thing to do was to run the rascals out. We have neither time nor space to give even a brief synopsis of bis speech, suffice to say that those absent missed a treat and those present were well repaid for the time lost mu _ attending me meeting, me arguments from the Senator's stand point were well grounded. The no dispensary people, as previously announced, took no part in the proceedings and were conspicions for their abeeice, so the dispensary advocates had everything their own way. State Senator Eugene S. Biease, of Salads, shot Joe Ben Coleman on the streets of Salnda last Friday afternoon, the wonnded man dying the next morning. Mr. Biease has given ont the following statement for publication: "Saluda, S. C, Sept. 9,1905 " "The death of Mr. Jce Ben Coleman on yesterday was caused on account of the discovery by me of intimate relations existing between Mr. Coleman and Mrs. Biease." Biease and Coleman were brother-inlaws, having married sisters, and np to the day of the tragedy were warm friends. ??? t < Mr. ? B. Smith, State President of the Southern Cotton Association and recently elected field agent, has issued a call for the county associafckffis in this State to meet next Mondav to ratifv the action of the com mittee in naming 11 cents as the minimum price of this year's cotton and to forward the general interests of the association. Warren Scruggs, Jr, fifteen years of age, fell from the inside of the State Capitol dom6 in Columbia to the marble floor below and was instantly killed. His body was terribly mangled. He was attempting to climb the steep ladders when he lost bis bold and fell to his death. Associate Justice Eugene Gary has sustained Circuit Judge Townsend in the Union dispensary case, but without prejudice, which meaoe that the case can come op in the Sapreme Court. The yellow fever situation in the fever stricken district along the Mississippi river is much improved There were no deaths from fever in New Orleans yesterday. Ansel, of Greenville, has announced his candidacy for Governor. His platform is local option between prohibition and county dispensaries and is against high license. The casualties of the Italian earthquake now run into the thousands and the destruction to property cannot yet be ssoertained as it has been so great. The MikaB8, Admiral Togo's flag ship, is said to have caught Are and was destroyed. 599 men and oflicers is said to have lost their lives. Adjutant General John D. Frost bas announced that he will retire from politics at the end of his present term. The Laurens cotton growers have decided to hold their cotton for 11 C3Dt8. | FIFTY CENTS IN some conditions the gain from the use of Scott's Emulsion is very rapid.
