THE LEXINGTON DISPATCH. 3 * Wednesday, September 6,1905. Our Virginia Letter. I have delayed longer this time than I should. Bat ibis has not been from a want of interest in thiDg3 at home. I eagerly read the Dispatch for county news, and the State for newB of its kind. Am specially glad to see letters from near my former work. Sorry so many of my former members have crossed over the river to rest under the shade of the trees How it will add to our crown of rejoicing at that glad day if we can number them as those we have pointed to the Lamb of God tbat taketh fho airt r>f the world. and bave led to a higher and better lift! Glad oar vacancies are beiDg filled. This is Monday morning and one of the finest I have ever seen ud here. It has rained sll summer. Yesterday was clear and bracing?in fact cool in the shade. We had large congregations morning and night. My old classmate, now Eev. J. T. Saddle, of Washington, D. C, preached in the morning. Though we graduated fourteen years ago, he as the first classmate I have seen Bince . Iieft college. He is a brilliant orator. His old home is near here and he is home on a vacation. Our Synod has just closed its I Tk roaf nnlv ttUUUat UUUIOUUUU> ah uavv v?.j \ seven miles from here. The country sboat the church is high and hilly. ' I went with our delegate, Mr. John W. Phillips. As it happened I took along a heavy coat, and even then could Bcsrcely keep warm. Mr. Julian phoned home for his overcoat, which he wore with comfort in the middle of August. Dr. R. 0. Holland came up from Charlotte, N. C, and was in a shiver when he reached the ehurch. The clouds finally broke away, and it has been pleasant ever since. There was no special brilliancy at oar meeting. Don't think it measured to the meetiBge of the Boutb Carolina Synod. Met several former friends: Rev. T. O. Kiester, formerly of Prosperity, S. C., Rev. W. H. Greever, of Colombia and Rev. C. J. Sox, just recently from Lexington connty. The latter was ordained at this meeting, and I am to sn\ over to his work in Flovd ~ - - county to install him the third Sunday in next month. ' Will have to go on train 60 miles, and then drive in stage and baggy about 35 miles further. Since writing, I have spent a day in a court room at' Wytheville, our county seat. I had to go down and ' appear before court to get license or permission or something in order to perform marriage. You must do this up here, and give a bond of $500 too, that you will comply with the laws of the State on marriage. Polities are warm up here, even if ? the weather is not. The people are almost evenly divided. This is true even in our church. Dr. W. W. Backbone of our nearest neighbors, members and best friends, is Democratic candidate for the Legislature and we hope and believe he will be elected. Kind wishes to all. S. C. Ballentine. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, wliich is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. Samuel Smith, son of George and Mary M. Smith, was born September the 26 th, 1849, and died July the 5, 1905, at his heme on Pond Branch. On the following day the remains were interred at Pond Branch Methodist church. Born in a Christian home and reared under Christian influences, he imbibed that sweetness of spirit and stamina of character that prepares for usefulness and consistency in service. He early united with the Bethelem Evangelical Lutheran church of the Black Creek section of which he continued a consistent member for many years after which he moved his membership, together with his family, to Pond Branch meiuuuibii JupiHuupai VJUUJ/UJU, uuuwBrother Smith was three times married and was the father of ten children, eight of whom are living. Are You Engaged? Engaged people should remember that after -marriage many quarrels can be avoided by keeping their digestions in good condition with Electric Bitters. S. A. Brown, of Bennettsville, S, C., says: "For years my wife suffered intensely from dyspepsia, complicated with a torpid liver, until she lost her strength and vigor, and became a mere v. ,-eck of her former self. Then she tried Electric Bitters, which helped her at once, and finally made her entirely well. She is now strong and healthy. Owing to the fact that the clever crooks all over the country have been acquiring much wealth by raising money orders, the postal authorities have adopted a new form of order which is said to defy the forgers. Toe amount will be punched in tne order as is frequently done in bank checks. As soon as the new forms can be printed they will be distributed among Uncle Sam's seventy odd thousand postmasters. . A woman in politics is about as ornamental as a diamond in a mud puddle. There would be no such thing as a silent tomb if women had their way. If all donkeys had long ears it would be necessary to change the style of masculine headgear. Society people make as much fuss about getting married as theatrical people do in getting divorced. Business Diplomacy as Used by a Book Agent THE book agent had managed to gain an audience with the lady of the house by sending up an in nocent looting carci. ne no sooner ucgan to state his business, however, than the lady called to a servant and said: "James, show the gentleman the door." "Thank you, James," said the wily agent in a kindly tone, "but it will be unnecessary for you to trouble yourself. I saw the door as I came in, and I must say it .8 a handsome thing, indicating a home of culture and refinement. Now, madam," he continued, turning to the lady, "as I was saying, in order to introduce this grand work we are offering a limited number of copies to the leading society people of the city at the special price ot*frily $10. This is the first call I havt?^iade, as your name heads the list." Note?He got the $10. A Word of Advice. Biddlecomb was holding his eldest son in earnest converse. "My boy," he said, "I am filled with anxiety when I think that you will soon make choice of a wife." "I have not done so yet, father," the young man replied. "What sort of wife would you suggest?" The older man looked around cautiously. "My son," he said, "if your father's advice is worth anything to you, let me urge you to seek a woman who hasn't the independence, the positiveness, the general characteristics of your mother." He was interrupted at that moment by a light footfall and realized that his beloved helpmeet had entered the room. "No. my son," he continued, "do not hope to find another woman like your mother. Such paragons are rarely if ever duplicated."? Cleveland Plain Dealer. Mad Pursuit of Wealth.
