Frank Harris, colored, was killed last Sunday about 2 o'clock, by being ran over by the east bound passenger train No. 12, near Peak. The negro it appears was sitting beside the track evidently asleep, as the engineer warned him of his danger by sounding the bell, but the negro paid no attention and his body was struck killing him. Coroner Wilson held the inquest and the verdict was in accordance with the above facts. The body was turned over to his brother and it was taken to Columbia, his home for interment. Mass Masting | - - - ** ?B } I At Lexington U n., aaiuruay, oepu 9th. Senator B. R. Tillman Will Speak on Dispensary. Whereas, petitions are being cir- j culated in Lexington county for a ! vote on the question of Dispensary , or no Dispensary. And, whereas, we, as taxpayers of said county, deem it a question of too much importance to be passed upon without, a full and free discussion, We, therefore, ask that a mass meeting of the citizens and tax payers of said county be held at Lexington C. 5., on Saturday, the 9th day of September next, at which time and place, Senator B. K. Tillman and other prominent speakers will be expected to address the people on the said issue, And that Col. G. T. Graham, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Anti-Dispensary Movement, be requested to have present on that occasion one or more speaker? who will advocate their side of the question I 12S signers whose names will appear to the above in next week's | ; issue. Another Shooting Scrape. There was another shooting scrape on our streets last Saturday afternoor The difficulty first began in an altercation between a country negro named Leaphart and a town darkey. - The policeman, A. K Metts, made an attempt to arrest the parties, when in some way another negro named Hill, who bad that day .purchased a single barrel hrAArth loadinc 9nn from the Denart meet Store, became involved. When the policeman and Mr. Bbett Griffith approached Hill he resisted when the firing began, the negro using bis shot gun and the officers , their pis; tols. As to who fired the first shot ! is a disputed question and is a matter for a jury to decide, but anyhow, Mr. Griffith was hit three times, once in the head and in each arm, all of which are mere flesh wounds. Several other persons were sprinkled with No. 4 shot, but none seriously. The negro made his escape uninjured, but oame in Tuesday and surrendered to the Sheriff and was subsequently released on a , $300 bond for bis appearance at court. During the melee a stray bullet hit a mule belonging to Mr. George Kyzer, of Irene, in the leg which had just been shod by Mr. Jesse Hallman, in front of his Bhop, some distance from the scene of the shooting, bat it also was only a flesh wound. We understand that the town council has purchased the mule and will use it at work on the streets. LeapU--A ?
