colored population of the city is in
quite a sad state of miod over the
appearance of a strange spider which
they say posseses the faculty of writing.
They declare it is a warning
from heaven that the day of judgment
is near at hand and in consequence
are having some warm revival
meetings, many having become converted
and sanctified.
The spider, it seems, is a strange
one, not like any ever seen before.
It is about the size of a silver dollar
and spins a peculiar shaped web
The interpreter says it forms the
letters "W. B. U. T. C. Rwhich
he interprets, "Woe Be Uato The
Colored Race." Negroes from miles
around have come to view the spectacle
and one of the colored ministers,
it is said, has preached a sermon on
its significance, comparing it to the
hand writing on the wall. Intelligent
parties who have seen the won
derful sight see nothing straDge
about it. What is referred to as
writing they say is simply a Y-shaped
web, yet it is doing a great work
among the negroes here.

Mr. fruiter's Positive Denial.
Attorney General Gunter, who is
Biek at the Columbia hospital, has
made the following statement as to
the testimony given before the committee
yesterday:

had ever asked, received, expected or
wanted any compensation or reward

a poBition or office connected
with the dispensary or any other
governmental agency. Why hie
name should be connected with such
statements he cannot conceive. That
he has never importuned any of the
governors for such favors, as will bs

No truthful man can be
found who will say that be ever paid
him anything. Of course, his name
may have been hawked without his
knowledge by designing persons; if
so, such person should, and must be,
held accountable, and be intends to
use every effort to find out if such is
the case, just as soon as be is able to
leave the hospital."
Public is Aroused.

Cruelty to Animals.
Columbia Record.
The police are paying close attention
to violations of law in reference
to cruelty to animals, and every case
which comes under their notice, or
is called fco their attention, is promptly
acted upon. This morning they
arrested a negro boy, "Willie Hobbe,
who had most fiendishly beaten a
poor mule attached to a City Transfer
Co'a. wagon. The animal could
barely walk. Great whelps were
upon its sides, and to anyone who
saw it it was difficult to repress a
feeling that a similar punishment
applied to him would not be too
severe.

Wages Increased.
Boston, Aug. 25 ?By the decision
of Judge Weutwortb, special arbitrator,
6 000 union carpenters received
an increase from thiity-seven and
a half to forty-one cents an hour for
eight hours a day, and double time
instead of time and a half for over
time, and eight instead of nine hours
a day for all shop and mill hands.
A little forethought may save you no

Bessie Thompson, colored, who was
tried at, t.hfl last term of the
Court of General Sessions for
this county, and sentenced to pay a
fine of $100 or serve eight months in
the penitentiary for shooting another
colored woman in Batesburg, took
the months and was carried to Columbia
Thureday.
