C. 3 Buyers One-fourth of a century in the Dry ( 4 1603 Main The Lexington Dispatch. I Wednesday, August 23, 1905. , r Notes from Newberry. The reunion at Little MouDtaiD . was well attended. A large number of people from adjoining counties were present and all seamed to enjoy themselves hugely, notwithstanding the warm weather. Oq this occasion we had the pleasure of shakiog hands wi;h two of our old friends from LexiDgton, the Hon. C M. Etird and Sheriff Corley. *T7- ?- I J J j.1 L . we marcDfu arouuu curougu ice I immense crowd of people, numbering 5 between four and five thousand, with our eyes wide open iooking^to see Auditor Derrick, Treasurer Shealy aod Clerk of Court Sam B. George, I so as to place the same office holders from Newberry byk their sides and let this great crowd of people decide which of the two counties had the ? best looking set of officers. We . certainly believe Auditor Cromer . would have wended his way home J with a red ribbon ;, Treasurer Epps and Shealy, according to our way of thinking, would have been nick and tuck, and Clerk of Court Goggins and Sam B., we rather think the I second party would have been called L to decide their good looks. Newberry is surrounded with a verv fertile ennntrtt enttnn in the principal product and is marketed .here. We have been informed through a reliable eource that a land ? renter who lives twelve miles above Newberry and who runs a twelve or fourteen horse farm, planted last year 250 acres in cotton, give 48 bales rent and gathered 285 bales together with 1,000 bushels of corn From the cotton seed of this crop, except for planting purposer, be realized $1,000 dollars. Our favorite bird dog, Nigal, seemed to have been intruding on the rights of' some unknown person where he suffered the death penalty from the effects of a bullet bole piercing him through the shoulders. The congregation of ihe Lutheran church of the Redeemer has extended a one month's vacation to their pastor. Rev. W. L Seabrook, and he is now recuperating in some of the great Dortbern cities from bis bard pressed labors of bis ministerial duties to bis members for tbe past year. Miss Lizzie Harman, of Lexington, wbo bas teen visiting tbe family of Hon. Jobn W. Earhardt for several .weeks, attended tbe reunion at Little : Mountain and will visit Mrs. Perry - Fulmer, at tbat place, for several weeks. From tbence sbe will stop over on her way to Lexington for a short while with ber brother-in-law, Mr. S. L. Smith. For tbe information of some of our friends in Lexington we will say the report which bas been in circulation that two of my fingers bad been severed is incorrect. Only a small portion of tbe third finger on tbe right band was severed. Time and Bpace no doubt will not permit us to give tbe full details as to bow I lost this little portion of finger. Good luck to you, Mr. Editor, and your dear readers, is our wish. B. B. H. m t m A little forethought may save you no end of trouble. He expressed hopes that peace might be secured and warmly praised^PreBident Roosevelt for the efforts made to secure the meeting of the plenipotentiaries. He said the demands of Japan as announced were not fast or reasonable. She could, no doubt, claim territorial compensation, which territory Bhe now holds by the sword, but not a money indemnity also. JapaD, be said, forced the war and was not in the same position as Germany. "When peace came to be discussed between France and Germany the latter had conquered and held its capital. Japan has touched no vital part of Russia, but ha?, on the contrary, reused the patriotism of the Russian people and the nation which burned its capital to save the country is capable cf equally great sacrifices for its honor. Russia would, however, be ill advised not to consent to surrender Sakhalin to J-:pan and restore Manchuria to China, but beyond this she should not be asked to go.*' Is it Right? Is it right that a property owner should lose $5.20 to let a dealer make 50 cents ? A dealer makes 50 cents more on fourteen gallons of ready-for-use paint, at $1.50 per gallon, than our agent does on eight gallons of L, & M. paint and six gallons of linseed oil, which make fourteen gallons of the best paint in the world, at $1.20 per gallon; the property owner loses just $4.20. Is it right? It only requires 4 gallons of L. & M. and 3 gallons of linseed oil to paint a moderate sized house. Ten thousand churches painted with Longman & Martinez L. & M. Paint. Liberal quantity given to churches when bought from W. P. Roof. Look at These Pacts. ; ' The Times and Democrat is ready to advocate that plan of handling whiskey in this State that will be most conductive to the sobriety and we'lfare of its citizens. We have studied the subject in ail its aspects, and we have come to the conclusion that the dispensary system is the best solution of the question.^ We have not relied altogether on our experience in endeavoring to reach a conclusion, but we have studied figures from States in which prohibition has held sway for a great many years, and they have strengthened rather than weakened the opinions we have formed from our personal experience with the different modes of handling whiskey. In bis speech at Edgefield Senator D Tillman said he bad heard a report that John Bell Towill, of Bateaburg, had received a fine horse as a present * from some whiskey dealer in Kentucky. Now the Batesburg Advocate states that Mr. Towill bought ^ the horse from a dealer in Batesburg and paid $275 for the animal. Every body who knows John Bell Towill I will stand for his honesty and in- g tegrity, even if he is in bad company. S We do not beltave that he has ac cepted rebates or presents or anything else whioh he ought not. We have discussed with him his connection with the State board on more I than one occasion, and we feel sure that if every man connected with the dispensary was as straight as Towill, the system would be honestly administered and the restrictive features of the law fully carried out. John Be)l Towill is not a grafter, ^ and Senator Tillman should not have alluded to such a report without Bome evidence at leaBt of its truth. [Those who know John BellTowill know that be is absolutely incapable of doing a dishonorable act. He is a high toned Christian gentleman of lofty character and the strictest integrity, and we are glad that those editors who know him are indignant at the insinuations made against his honesty and integrity as it comes with more force from them than it would from his home papers -?Editor Lexington Dispatch.] Saving money is a lot of fun for Jj your heirs.
