Middlsljurg Kill Enlarging*. Mr. W. O. Farber, of Batesburg, general manager of the Middleburg cotton mill, was in Columbia' yesterday on business in connection with his mill. This mill is now adding 4,000 spindles to its present equipment, making the total number of spindles 10,000 and in addition to this enlargement a $6,000 dye* plant has just been completed, which be gan operation yesterday for the first time. San Diego, Cat, July 21 ?Thirtynine members of the crew of the United States gunboat Bennington wero killed and four score were injured, twenty-four of whom seriously, at 10 o'clock this forenoon by a boiler explosion that disabled the vessel in San Diego harbor. Fifteen sailors are missing. There were more than 250 men aboard the warship when accident occurred and many men were hurled or forced to jump into the sea by the terrific explosion, which lifted a part of the deck and compelled the beaching of the ship. African Cannibals. Berlin, July 19 ?An official report from the colonial authorities in West Africa describes the outbreak on part of the cannibal tribe of Nijems in German Cameroons. It is stated that duriBg the month of June this tribe devoured 2,000 negroes and eight white persons. Mother's Hard Earnings for Defense of Her Son Gone. Richmond, 'led., July 19?Five hundred dollars, which Mrs. Knapp had raised through hard effort for the defense of her son, John Knapp, who is awaiting trial here for murder, has been lost in the wreck of the Commercial Bank at Hagerstown, Ind. Knapp stands accused of the murder of Lennie Geisler. marshal of Hagerstown.. Knapp is now in jail here, and his mother had directed her energies to ward procuring enough money to employ attorneys. She finally collected $500 among relatives and placed the money in the Commercial bank with John Bowman, the cashier, who killed himself after looting the bank. The money is gone and Mrs. Knapp is perhaps the most wretched and despairing of the 800 depositors who lost their savings in the institution. A Surprise Party. Witte, President lioosevelt renewed his suggestion for an armistice.
