Christ as Seen in Actual Life.
The following id the only reliable
pen picture of Christ as 6een in
actual life, and is an exquisite piece
of word paintiog. It is tsken from
a MS. now in possession cf Lord
Kelly and is in his library. It was
copied from an original letter of
Publius Lentulus, at Rome, it being
the usual custom .if Roman governors
to advise the Senate and the
people of such material things as
happened in their provinces. In the
days of Tiberius Cae3ar, Publius
Lentulue, Procurator of Judea, wrote
the letter to the Senate:
There appeared in these our days
a man of great virtue named Jesus
Christ, who is yet living amongst ue;
and of the Gentiles is accepted as a
prophet of Truth. He raises the
dead and cures all manner of diseases.
A man of stature somewhat
tall, and comely, such as the beholder
may both love and fear. His
hair of the color of a chestnut full
ripe; plain to his ears, whence downward
it is more orient and curling
and waving about bis shoulders. In
the midst of bis head a seam, a partition
in the hair, after the manner
of the Nazarites. His forehead
plain and very delicate; his face
without spot or wrinkle, beautiful
with a lovely red, his nose and mouth
so formed that nothing can be reprehended,
his beard in color like his
hair, not very long, but forked, his
look innocent and mature. His eyes
grey, clear and quick and luminous
In reproving he is terrible, bis eyes
piercing as with a two edged sword
the greedy, the selfish and the oppressor,
bot look with tenderest pity
on the weak, the erring and the sinful.
Conrteons and fair spoken
Pleasant in conversation, mixed with
gravity. It cannot be remembered
that any have seen him laugh, but
many have seen him weep. In proportion
of body most excellent?a
man for his singular beauty surpassing
the children of men.
If the Baby is Cutting Teeth,
Be sure and U8e that old and well
tried remedy, Mrs. Winslow's Soothing
Syrup, for children teethiDg. It
soothes the child, softens the gums,
allays all pain, cures wind colic BDd
is the best remedy for diarrhoea.

Physical Superiority of Jews.
Cornoarison of Jews with other
' ?r
people in respect to their vitality are
mide from time to time, and always
makd for discouragement of the other
people in the competition. A new
one comes to hand by way of the
London Lancet, which publishes the
result of an investigation of the
physical condition of children livin*
in the slums of Leeds. In every
ca9e the Jewish children showed a
marked superiority in condition.
Comparisons were made of 3,000
children similarly situated as to age,
poverty, character and residence
The little eight year-old Jews were
three pounds heavier and two and a
I half inches taller than the Gentile
I
children of like age. At ten, they
were sis and quarter pounds heavier
ana two and a half inches taller. At
twelve, seven pounds heavier and
one and a quarter inches taller. Jewish
bones and teeth were batter, and
the Lancet notes that the nasal
chamber was larger in Jewish children,
and that they were remarkably
free from adenoids. The chaiac'eristic
Jewish nose, then, is not without
some substantial advantages.

The Jewish mothers, it seems, got \
better cs.re before their children were j
born and had more milk for their
babies, and after weaning, the young
Jew children were better and more
sensibly fed than the Gentile children.

A Darlington Bank.
Columbia Record.
There was a rumor in the city this
morning that a large banking institution
in Darlington had closed.
A telegram message from that city
confirmed the renort. the DarliDeton
. ~ I ' w
Trust company having closed its doors
this morning. The cause of th3 disaster
was stated to be the inability
of the bank to realize cash on paper
that was held by it and which it was
necessary in the course of business to
convert into money.
The amount of deposits in the
bank could not be definitely stated,
but it was said that the depositors
would not lose a dollar as it was
thought certain that with a little time
all obligations would be met in full.
Naturally there was a great deal of
excitement amongst depositors, but
the statement that they would be
paid in full had a reassuring effect.
The bank had a capital stock of $120,000
paid in and it was cloBely identified
with various enterprises in Darlington.
What effect the failure will
have upon them could not be definitely
stated, but The Record's informant
seemed to take an optimistic view ot
the situation. ?
Later information was that the Independent
Cotton Oil company was
involved aod went down with the
bank.
Keith Dargan is president of the
bank.

Cotton Crop Hurt "by Bain.
Washington, July 11.?The Weather
Bureau's crop bulletin issued today
says: Over the greater part of
the country from the South Atlantic
and Gulf coasts northward excessive
rainfalls have ! greatly hindered the
cultivation of crops.
In the Carolinas, Georgia and
Florida, over the greater part of
Alabama and in Southern Mississippi
cotton generally has done well. Good
growth ie reported from central and
western districts, but much of the
crop has suffered deterioration, largely
from lack of cultivation due to
continuous heavy rains.
In Tenneesee, Northern Mississippi
and Louisiana, fields have been
abandoned to grass. Too rank
growth, more or less, is reported in
all districts, except the Carolinas and
Florida. Wet weather in Texas
favored increase of boll weevils,
which also are causing loss in Louisiana.
The general condition of tobacco
is promising, though the crop is
suffering for cultivation in Kentucky.
A good growth is reported from
I nearly all th9 tobacco producing !
