Thoughts for Farmers.
j Charles Petty, in Progressive Fanner.
''Agree with thine adversary quickly i
whilst thou art in the way with him." !
"Debate thy cause with thy neighbor
himself.*'
These sentences are from an old
volume that is rather too much j
neglected in these strenuous days, i
.. !
We commend a more imeiugeLit,
study of it to the farmers. A few
days ago one man shot another and
killed him here in Spartanburg as
the result of a long standing grudge
about a real or imagined trespass.
In Anderson, S. C, this week an
excellent citizen was severely cut by
a neighbor, the dispute haviDg arisen j
from the transfer of a lot. A quarrel
over a fence line, or a few feei of
i
land, or trespassing stock or fowls, j
comes up very frequently. That
should not be so. When anything
goes wrong go at once to the man
who caused the trouble. Go as a
neighbor and friend and put on no
war paint. State your grievance to
him alone and ask for his version of
the affair. Never go around teJiing
others what a bad neighbor you have.
Do not talk to others about your
disagreements. The good will and
friendship of the farmers whose
lands join yourB are worth more than
a fowl, or a stray calf, or destructive
pig. Make up your mind that in all
these differences the friendship and
affection of neighbors are more desirable.
Never let your imagination
get away with you. Get at the
truth. Do not believe what reports
say. Line fences, land corners and
old roads are sources of trouble. It
becomes farmers above all men to
settle their disputes at home, especially
when they originate from
theee causes.

Odessa Burned.
OJessa, June 29.?Hundreds of
rioters were shot and many killed by
the troops during last night's outbreak.
Martial law has been proclaimed.
Fires are still burning,
but there is a lull in the disorders.
Practically the entire harbor was
gutted by fires started by the mob
last night. All warehouses, with
large quantities of merchandise as
well as four or five Russian steamers,
were burned. Several Cossacks and
300 rioters were killed. The troops
i are rapidly restoring order.

Wholesale Lynching.
Watkinsville, Ga., June 29?The
State of Georgia has never been vis- I
ited by a more wholesale lynching
than that which took place here last
night, in which the county jail was
cleared of all its prisoners by a
mob of angry men and all save one of
them shot to death. That one, a negro,
escaped death in a most marvelous
manner. When the first volley of
bullets had been fired he fell as if
shot to death and allowed the dead
bodies of the other prisoners to fall
on top of him. When the firing had
ceased he was still lying in this position,
and the lynchers, supposing
every individual to to be dead, went
away and left the negro Patterson
slightly wounded.
Since the murder of the Holbrooke
a little over a month ago, on their farm
about four miles from WatkiDBville,
when Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook, a posperous
and popular farming family
were murdered, ife is supposed bj negro*?,
the community has been in a
state of intense excitement.
The real cause of the lynching was
the attempted crime of Sandy Price.
Up to that time the people were determined
that justice ehoud be meted
out to the murders of the Holbrooks,
but there is little likelihood
that there would have been a lynching
had not Sandy Price, on the day
before yesterday, made an attempt
to assault Mrs. Dooley.
About 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon
Price went to the home of Mrs.
Dooley. Mrs. Dooley had gone into a
room and was lying on the bed with
her baby. Suddenly the back door
of the house was thrown open and
thi3 negro butted in and made aruBh
for her. She grabbed her baby and
ran through the front door in time to
get out of his reach. As she did so
she screamed at the top of her voice,
and the negro went out the back
door and made into the woods.
Mrs. Dooley sent word back to
Watkinsville that this negro had entered
her house and in less than fifteen
minutes fully forty armed men
were on the scent in buggies and
afoot. The negro was tracked for
* ? i
nearly a ball mue to toe oouse oi u
negro woman and the bouse was surrounded.
At that lime it looked as if Price
would be killed. He was told to
come out of the house and as he did
so, after some hesitation, there were
three or four shots fired at him by
the mob, but he was not hit.
He was taken to the jail at Watkinsville,
and from that moment until
the lynching last night there has
been an intense feeling against Price
and four negroes euspected or known
to have murdered the Holbrooke.
Among the prisoners killed was a
white man.
