Growing Peas.
j Chas. Petty, in Progressive Farmer.
The average lands of this Piedmont
region are short on humus.
Guano and cotton will not furnish
it. Very little forest land is cleared.
The old lands after holding crops
for many years are much ruu down.
If red clover would grow here, that
would be an admirable source of
humus. But it ia difficult to get a
3tand that will go through May.
Peas are our great dependence.
There is nothing better. Any one
knows bow to sow or plant and cultivate
them. The best varieties for
forage and land improvement are
the UakDown -\nd Clay peas. The
former is a stocky plant with a large
root and not disposed to run when
thick. Thef Iron pea is advertised
in the lower part of 2fche State as
superior to either of the above, as it
remains green till frost and does not
shed its leaves. The early varieties
like the "Whippoorwill, the white
pea, the sober pea and blaek pea are
excellent, and on fairly rich land
will make forage and peas. They
may be sown up to the middle of
~ ... . . it
July, especially on bottom iana.
The late varieties are best to bring
up worn out land. They may be
sown from the 20th of May to the
1st of July. The first two weeks of
June is the best time. Sow a bushel
to the acre. Plow them in with
long tongue plows, cr half shovels,
and run a drag or smoothing harrow
over the land to prepare it for
the mower.

She Made a Mistake.
The following is told of a couple
who attended the Wyoming State
fair and stopped at one of the best
hotels in Salem. About 2a.m, the
husband was seized rith severe
stomach f cramps and was almost
frantic. His wue was very rnucn
| frightened, bat she knew -something
must be done qaickly, without putting
on any clothes she started down
stairs on the jump with naught on
but her "nighty.1' Banning into the
dining room she saw the mustard
cruet on the table. Emptying the
contents into her handkerchief she
started up stairs on the run and
entered the first door she came to
Here she saw a man lying on the
bed, who in the dim darkness she
mistook for her husband, and gently
tucking up his lingerie slapped the
poultice on his abdomen. The man
let out a howl andjitting up in bed
shouted: "Woman, what in the h?1
are you doing ?" There was a shriek
a patter of feet on the hall floor and
frightened half to death the poor
wife found her room and suffering
husband. She told him of her troubles,
and it tickled him so that his
cramDS took a change of veDue.
"That Awful Stroke."
(J. P. GibsoD, in Cheraw Citizen.)
Mr. McLaurin was first introduced
by the county president, Mr. Tindal,
and for mpre than one hour discussed
the great and important cotton
situation. He was frequently greeted
with prolonged applause, for his
speech, which was published in full
in several of the daily papers, and
was pronounced by all as being decidedly
the speech of the day. But
at the close, when McLaurin gave
the State dispensary that awful
stroke, the crowd came near going
wild with enthusiast; one round of
applause after another went up from
the crowd, which, in a most unmi^
tak&ble manner indicated their hearty
approval.

Square Deal for Chinese.
Washington, June 22.?Chinese
immigration to this country and the
execution of the Chinese txclusion
laws, constituted the principal topic
of discussion at today's meeting of
the cabinet. The president made it
clear at the meeting today that he
was determined the Chinese should
have fair treatment, under the law,
whenever they applied for admissionto
this country at any port. Secretary
Hay will take action on behalf
of this country to ' correct any misapprehension
that may exist in China,
as to the harsh enforcement of the
Chinese exclusion laws. There is no
disposition to exclude from the country
any of the classes of Chinese who
are exempt from the operation of the
exclusion laws.

Found a Cure for Dyspepsia.
Mrs. S. Lindsay, or Fort William,
Ontario, Canada, who has suffered quite
a number of years from dyspepsia and
great pains in the stomach, was advised
by her druggist to take Chamberlain's
Stomach and Liver Tablets. She did
so and says, "I find that they have done
me a great deal of good I have never
had any suffering since I began using
them.'' If troubled with dyspepsia or

Not Satisfied.
A naval officer is said to have told
the Washington correspondent of
the New York Evening Poet that the
navy would not be satisfied until it
had seventy battleships. At present
prices such a fleet would cost the
taxpayers of this country at least
$550,000,000. ''It is interesting to
note/' says the Boston Herald, "that
before we were a-world-powering a
naval board laid down a comprehensive
plan of our desirable naval
j strength and placed our needs at
just ten battleship." But what is
the use of being a World Power if
we are not going to be a World
Power? Being the greatest nation
in the world, naturally we ought to
have the biggest navy. At least
that is the argument which appeals
to the judgment or our most expert
patriots and the pooketbooks of our
best shipbuilders.
