Japan's Future Colonics.
If Japan conquers the Colossus of
the North, the hitherto dreaded giant
of unknown power, will she not jastly
feel that she can cope on equal terms
with the other great world powers,
and feel that, in a war with any of
them, except, possibly, England, she
has at least an even chaDce of victory 1
The ultimate fighting strength,
counting one in five of her population
of over forty-five million people, will
give her an army of nine millions,
and with Ihe twenty-two millions in
Manchuria and Korea to draw from
for auxiliary forces, coolie labor aiding
iu transportation, building fortifications,
and making intrenchmente,
she now appears as formidable in the
Orient,, where, through distance
alone she will be difficult to reach by
an attacking force.
Owing to the fact that nations can
not leave their cost entirely unprotected,
no great power, except poseibly
England, could send to Japanese
waters a fleet in anyway comparable
with that of the Mikado. The difficulties
to be overcome in transporting
even an army corps to the East,
the long preparation necessary, and
the dangers attendant on such a
move, unless the attacking force controls
the sea, would almost preclude
the possibility of invasion. Should
Japan feel the necessity for expansion
at some future time, as she has felt
it in the past, might she not think
that she has strength enough to
wrest the Philippines from us? These
islands, owing to their great distance
from our Pacific cost and their nearness
to Japan, will always be a constant
sourse of weakness to us, and,
possibly, a constant temptation to
her.

Jerome Takes a Hand.
New York, June 22?District Attorney
Jerome, of New York county,
has entered into an investigation of
-the Equitable Life Assurance society
trouble and today telegraphed to
State Superintendent of Insurance
Hendriks asking him to forward at
once official copies of his reports.
The district attorney would make
no statement as to his intentions in
the matter.
August Belmont, president of the
Interborough Rapid Transit company,
has tendered his resignation
aB director of the Equitable society.
Mr. Morton is now devoting himself
largely to the work of reorganizing
the board of directors.
Farmer's Clnh.
A few days ago a few farmers met
at the home of a neighbor and organ
ized a farmers' club. After the organization
there was an informal talk
on the cultivation of cotton in its
early shape. The farmers who had
tried the weeder a season or two were
delighted with it. If it is run over
the crop twice before it is thinned it
makes the work lighter. It was suggested
that the weeder should be
used just as the cotton is coming up
and again in a week. The object of
the club is self improvement and the
exchange of plans and methods of

To Boycott American Goods.
Singapore Straits Settlement, June
. 12.?The Cantonese merchants here
have taken up the matter of boycotting
American manufactured goods
and have initiated a movement in
support of their compatriots in
China. The boycott will be carried
to the same extent as that in China
and will include all American pro* i
ducts.
Pending the result of the appeal
of the Chinese exclusion act of the
United States the Chinese have apparently
decided to hold aloof from
the boycott, but ii is declared if the
act becomes eff.-ctive the boycott will
be vigorously pushed throughout al

Death of Sir. J. D. Cromer.
I The State, June 23rd.
Mr. James D. Cromer, a brother
of Messrs. J. C. and A. L. Cromer, of
this city, died at his home in Lexington
county at 5 30 o'clock yesterday
morning. He had been ill from
fever about two weeks. Mr. Cromer
was 20 years of age and was a member
of Zion Lutheran church. He is
survived by bis father and mother

A L, of Columbia, and Augustus,
Robert, Thomas and Frank, of Lexington
county, and two sisters,
Misses Sallie and Maggie Cromer,
who reside at the family home in
Lexington county.
The funeral will be held at St.
David's Lutheran church at S o'clock
this morning. The services will be
conducted by the young man's uncle,
the Rev. J. A. Cromer.

terms of peace, according to an interview
had by a correspondent of

prove to be more moderate than had
been expected and will be based on
the propositions made in the Japanese
note on the eve of hostilities,
with the adoption of an indemnity

such as the cession of the Island of
Sakhalin, the disarmament of Vladivostok
or the limitation of Russia's
naval rights in the Pacific, but will
insist on guarantees against the renewal

The diplomat is quoted as saying
that Japan wishes to live on terms
of friendship with Russia in the
future, end is not disposed to make
over harsh stipulations.

Soy Wrecker, Likely.
The "Twentieth Century Flyer"
on the Lake Shore road was wrecked
near Mentor, Ohio, on Wednesday
and eighteen persons were killed and
twelve injured.
Cleveland, jne 23 ? There is
some circumstantial evidence that a
boy was the cause of the wreck of
the Lake Shore Twentieth Century
limited train. Two men, William
Usher and James Barnes, claim to
have met a boy soon after the wreck
with a lantern, and who said he
"shut the switch." It is reported
that the boy was in Mentor recently
and had been boasting of the fact
that be carried a switch key, and of
how easy it was to open a switch
It is supposed be is one and the same.
The inquest will begin Monday at
! Painesville, to be conducted by Cor|
oner York, of Lake county, with
State Railway Commissioner Morris.
The coroners of Cuyahoga and Lake
counties will also try to fix the
blame and find a cause for the accident.

three are dead; the grandmother of
twelve. There were about seventyfive
persons present, who enjoyed a
bountiful dinner and passed the time
pleasantly in social enjoyments.
