Lexington housewives no ''. id cf ;

and many complaints have been j

inmates will be provided with jobs j

a magnificent thing for art, and newspaper
artists are not the only offenders,"
said a naval officer recently' in
from a cruise., "First you draw your
sea with your big. fighting_ ship on
top, then you imagine the Whitehead
uodemeath. Then you touch her off
*
and picture the ship with her brow
pointed at least to the altitude of the
pole star. It reasons out beautifully
from what the artist thinks be knows
about the effect of high explosives,
but?, At the torpedo schools abroad
I have seen eome score of vessels
torpedoed, old vessels of all sorts of
sizes aDd structure, but I.never have
seen one hoisted in the way upon
which the artists seem to have united
In fact the appearance immediately
after the shock is that of a sharp
downward sagging of the ship. But
this is only apparent; the wate
swirls up against the side of the ship
and reduces her visible freeboard.
The vessel does not have time to lift
to the shcck of the explosive; ber
bottom is ripped out, she fills with
water and goes down without any of
that preliminary skyward flight upon
which art has agreed."
