The small grain has been badly damaged by the recent cold wave. T. X. L. cures rheumatism. Nearly the whole white population of the town of Lexington has been vaccinated. , Mr. T. J. Buff, of Switzer Neck, a successful farmer of large experience, was in town Friday. Men, women and children made their appearance in new clothing of beautiful design, Easter. Nearly all the fig bushes hereabouts were killed down to the ground by the late cold spell. An old bachelor in town says that love is more like a pestilence than a disease. How about this, girte? The base ball fever has struck this State like a cyclone, and nearly everybody is afflicted with the contagion. Mr. M. H. Poath, a well known truck farmer of this vicinity, called ? it.; 1 id ana renewed me suuacupuuu mday. Mr. J. D. Harman, who is nicely situated on Gilbert K. F. D No. 1, paid us a pleasant pall while in town Friday. Mr. H. F. Corley, a prominent farmer and a pleasant gentleman, was i~lown Friday selling cotton and trading. Mr. Marshall Berry, a prominent farmer on Black creek, and son, were in town Friday shopping and called in to see us. Orangeburg will make extensive improvement to its electric plant and better lights are promised the citizens of that burg. Mr. Sid S. Corley, of Lower Fork, in whose borne peace, plenty and prosperity abidetb, was in town Friday flftllina cotton. Anderson will probably have a fireman's tournament on th8 Fourth of July. Arrangements are being made looking to this end. Mr. Ji D. Langford, of the Ella section, was in town Friday on business, and paid his subscription as well as that of his neighbor, J. S. Addy. T. X. L. relieves when properly applied. The Daughters of the Confederacy in Columbia, are making elaborate preparations for Memoral Day, which this year falls on Wednesday, May 10th. , This is the season for the fresh coat of paint for your bouse. It brightens up your surroundings and will, make you more cheerfdl and happy. Dr. L. O. Ott, the well known eye specialist, died at his residence in Columbia last Wednesday of tuberculosis. The .interment was at Branchville. Hon. J. P. Cjary, of Pickens, has been commissioned by Governor Hey ward, as special Judge to hold court in Richland county for four weeks, commencing last Monday. An election has been ordered for the 20th of May, in Pickens county on the question of dispensary or no dispensary. Pickens is one of those counties where "Mountain Dew" is as plentiful as rivers of waters. C. C. Wooten, a resident of Columbia, and a collector of Collier, was found wandering the streets of Charleston in a demented condition. When taken up he was unable to tell his name, where he came from or anything whatever about himself. Now they have rubber tired rockers on the chairs. They make no noise and do not wear carpets. They are built on the "hug me tight" plan with just room enough for two, and for this reason they are destined to become quite popular among sparking couples. Some of our people enjoyed beans, new Irish potatoes and cucumbers, but they came from Fiorida, instead of Lexington, and were raised on the truck farm of Mr. C. F. Snyder, the Bon-in-law of Col. M. A disagreement between him and President Alexander is the cause assigned for the unusual request. Gen. John D. Frost, Adjutant and Inspector General, says that the report that he would not be a candidate for reelection under any circumstance is erroneous. We are aware of this fact because an office bolder is like a child crying for sugar plums, the more you give him the more he wants. Then, growing bolder, they asked her to luncheon, and she accepted that invitation, too. When, on the appointed day, she came on board with her companion, the captain, saw her from his cabin and recognized her. Tbe jury for the second trial of Nan Patterson, the actress, for killing Caesar Young, in New York city, have been drawn and the trial began on Monday. John Barnett, who killed Albert Wakefield at Mariana, Ark., was taken out and hanged on Tuesday of last week by a mob of twenty men. All the parties were negroes. Kalieff, the assassin of Grand Duke Sergiue, was condemned to death at Moscow on Tuesday of last week. He expressed no regret for the crime, but said be would do it again. Four newsboys were crushed to death in a rush for free tickets given by a patent medicine show in Indiananolis last week. Several others % fell down the stairway and were hurt. Jno. E. Smith, a United States soldier, and former citizen of Pickens county, who deserted from his command at Fort McPherson, was captured near his old home on Tuesday and carried back. He will be courtmartialed. Miss Bessie Helen Davis, aged 23, an actress, was shot and fatally wounded in Philadelphia on Tuesday of last week by Edward Smedes, an actor, in a hotel where they were stopping. He shot her because she declared she was going to leave him. Then be shot- himself, but the bullet flattened against his skull and the wound was slight. Rheumatic Pains Quickly Relieved. Comptroller General Jones yesterday notified the counsel for the Standard Oil Company that the valuation of their property in - this State bad been raised from $56,000, as returned by them, to $200,000. This action was taken after a careful examination of the returns made for the various counties in this State. In Columbia the plant is valued at $4,700 in th9 returns and the highest valuation in the State is that of Charleston, where there are supply tanks and other works for supplying the entire State. There the plant is valued at $37,000. Information received by the comptroller places the valuation of this plant at cloea on to $100,000. The Japanese Protest. Saigon, Cochin-China, April 20 ? The Baltic fleet is still in-Kamranh bay. Admiral De Jonquieree, commanding the French war vessels in this region, has taken every step to insure the neutrality of France, while the vessels remain in these waters. The order of Judge Ernest Gary directing the Master of Richland county to advertise for creditors of the Alliance Exchange, has been sustained by the Supreme Court. The merits of this decision, which was in | the case of the Administratrix of H. E Brookshire, (who has died since the beginning of the action) to have a receiver appointed and the funds of the exchange distributed through the hands of the court.
