Cruel to Agitate Now. We regret very much to see that the annexation of Brookland to Columbia has been reopened by the Evening Record of that city and a few selfish persons od the Lexington side of the river. This policy of keeping the people eternally stirred up broods no good to the progress of either place. Some two years ago the people of Brookland overwhelmingly rejected the proposition in an election neld for the arbitrament of this question, and we submit, on the opinion of a layman, that another election cannot be held in the same territory on the same question for some years to come without disregarding the plain prohibition of the State constitution. This being the case it is wrong as well as a great injustice to those unfortunate people at tins time, wnen tne names 01 tneir burning homeB and household effects have scarcely been extinguished, to harass their minds and divide their thoughts between annexation and the far more weightier and important question of where the means are to come from to replace their burned homes and supply themselves and their family with clothing, furniture aDd the necessaries of life, especially so when we consider that no good can come out of euch an agitation. The people of Brookland has been called upon to pass through a trying ordeal and a great calamity, and working upon their fears ot having another conflagration raze their pretty town, the annexationists holds out the inducement that by becoming a part and parcel of the municipality of Columbia, Brookland will enjoy the same fire and police protection as Cblumbia. This is a very doubtful inducement as it is a known fact that Columbia cannot and does not give its own people adequate fire protection on account of its insufficient water supply and ' police protection by reason of its ' inability to sustain a larger and nnlinp Kvafpm. "Rut. should I the Columbia paper make its cffer good the people of Brookland would i have to pay for these protections out < of their own pockets besides con- 1 tributing largely toward the main- 1 tainance of the fire and police departments of Columbia, and as a plain business proposition it would be 1 economy for them to remain where they now are, a separate and distinct 1 municipalty and build these con- * veniences themselves rather than not only pay for them, but also submit to a tax for the benefit of their neigh- s bors across the river for time to come, t We understand from a reliable < source that the management of the Duck Mills will commence the installment of water works and sewer- t age systems together with other g conveniences that will give better ( protection and more comfort thaD Columbia could possibly do. In view of this fact it is wisdom for the peo- ( pie of Brooklaod to decline to sign j any paper petitioning for an election as to do so would be tying their hands so that they would be powerless to prevent an injustice from being done. t We are contending not so much 8 for the interests of Lexington county 1 as we are for thoBe of Brookland, for t to be candid Lexington can get along I better without Brookland than Brook- 8 land can without Lexington. We c hope that the annexationist will have 1 some mercy on the peace of mind of 3 * 1 t 1 1 V tnose already stricaen peopie bo mey * can give their undivided attention to c fcbe demands of f& nily duties and an t effort to replace their burned homes. If }7our baby is scrawny, Scott's Emulsion is what he wants. The healthy baby stores as fat what it does not need immediately for bone and muscle. Fat babies are happy ; they do not cry ; they are rich ; their fat is laid up for time of need. They are happy because they are comfortable. The fat surrounds their little nerves and cushions them. When they are scrawny those nerves are hurt at every ungentle touch. They -3 ? 1 - .?1-4- - ? C? /-?/-x 4- 4-1 o TT 1 ueiigm m o^uuo UJ.sion. It is as sweet as wholesome to them.
