Hill Notes.
To tbe E iiur of tbe Di^patcb:
Tne tanners are busy getting their
laid ready to plant c>rn and cotton,
as well as hauling gumo. It is
strange tee farmer canoot learn to
let co'ton alone and make plenty of
provisions for man and beast. Cotton
is too low in price to make.
Everything *l-e is high. This fall
cotton will be 4 cents per pound I
think. I have beeu canvassing a
part of the county and I saw what
they were domg on the North Edisto
river. Just as far as you can see the
lands of some of the farmers are
prepared for cotton.
I Mr Jackson has a fine saw mill,
and Mi. E zie Pool also has a fine
saw mill and gin in the satire buildiog.
Y ,u would be well pleased to
see his farm, aud especially his mil!
pond, as you are fond of fi-hiog. His
i pond looks as if there were fish in it.
Que of his tenants told me that when
ihey went to bi? smoke hou?e they
got their hog wiihoui u word and it

he moved ibsie about two
years ago. He is a hostler for busi- I
ness.
Some of the people of this vicinity j
are dying and some are marrying.
I have a case of la grippe and it
is all over our neighborhood
We need the chain gang od our
roads, especially oa the Pine PtaiD
road from Huckabau's mill to the
East old place. I aDd my sou cut "a
tree top out of the road near the
Itist old place several days ago. I
drove around it several times. It was
a dangerous obstruction in the road
The County Commissioner passed
over it a few diys ago. Perhaps he
will get things in better shape. I
suppose he appointed overseers. I
hope he will come around again and
see how they are getting along.
Now, Mr Editor, a word for the
tenants. The employer furnishes
i him with a mule or a horse sni all
implements to work the crop, but the
tenant pays fcr half the fertilizers. I I
fchmk this is wrong, and he also pays
for half the ginniDg. The emplojer
sits down at home while the tenant
carries the cotton to the gir, has it
fixed up in shape for marketing if he
can trust him, sells and returns him
the money. Tne tenant makes enough
food for the stock besides the cottcn
if he is a tenant that does his dutj.
The employer generally has a comi
missary and sells him goods at his
! own piice and when the settlement
is made iu the fail the employer settles
by the rule of three, as follows:
Ought's a ought and nine's a nine.
All the cotton and com is mine.

News from Newberry.
To the Edttor of fbe Dispatch:
Our peo has been eileDt for some

ticne to get straightened out
Newberry has two cotton miils Id
which two thousand people are depended
upon for a liviDg: her electric
light system is one among the
best; her sewerage system is good;
ber water is the purest. One great
failing to the town is that her 6tre*
are too narrow for electric cars. We
notice one great evil in which the
town authorities should give their
attention to, and that is not to allow
persons to congregate on the pavement.
The authorities should see
to it that the people be kept moving
and not obstruct the streets.
The anniversary of the societies of

large audience was present on this
occasion. President D. H. Taylor,

represented the Phrenakosraian society
as orator. His subject being:
"Tbe Light of Science."
The subject for debate was: "That
the Interests of the Republic Demand
that Trusts be Abolished"
The Excelsior society sustained the
affirmative, while the negative was
upheld by representatives of the
Pnrenkosmian society. Tbe Excelsior
was represented by E B Houaeal
and W. E. Pugfc: B. V. Chapman
and J. E. Hipp took the negative.
Tbe committee, composed of

"I can heartily and consientiously recommend
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
for affections of the throat and lungs.''
says Hon. John Sheniek, 220 So. Peoria
St., Chicago. "Two years ago during a
political campaign, I caught cold after
being overheated, which irritated my
tliroat and I was finally compelled to
stop, as I could not speak aloud. In my
cxteinity a friend advised me to use
Ch mberlain's Cough Remedy. I took
two doses that afternoon and could not
believe my senses when I found the next
morning the inflammation had largely
subsided. I took several doses that day,
kept right on talking through the campaign,
and I thank this medicine that I
won my seat in the Council." This remdv
